Hi guys,

First of all this isn't for me but a friend who flys a Trex 500. A few weeks ago he changed to a TT tail from belt.

I notice there is some metal dust around the end of the tail. And in flight it sounds like something is scraping or rubbing.

He says there's a bearing in the middle of the boom, and I asked did you CA it in? He said no it's meant to be free floating. I then asked if there was a rubber thing around the bearing and he said no but the ones on each end have rubber around them.

He said it just started when he started doing tic tocs.

I haven't looked inside it but it 100% for sure doesn't seem right to me.

Just wanted to see what people said about this so I can guide him in the right way (if it's wrong).

Thanks for the help guys!

I don't have the manual in front of me, but the instructions for the ESP kit did state to CA the bearing to a specific dimension on on the torque tube (just slightly off center). The instructions for the upgrade may be different, so it is worth a double check.

If it were me, I would pull it apart and find out where the metal shavings are coming from. Make the appropriate corrections and make sure the reinstall is done correctly. Something is not right in this situation for sure.

Thanks wareagle for the reply, I shall have a look next time we meet. I didn't think it would be right either... Not at all really.

metal shavings!!

Mine did the same thing!! Took apart the boom and almost the entire tt was ground down?? Not sure how this happened. I'll post a pic when I take it apart again. I need to order new tt shaft now. I'm going to put on 2 bearing holders next time.

Make sure you have aprox. 2mm play in the torque tube. shove the boom in with the tail unit on and pull it out 2mm.

WELL....

Been hearing a funny noise the past couple of flights. Asked a guy near me at the field to listen to see if he heard it. Brought hear in and the TT broke. Tail stopped spinning and hit throttle hold. I was about 10' in the air so not much broke. All 3 servo horns broke since I have metal gears. Blades are fine and so are the paddles. Also broke the rear fin. That's it, luckaly. Anyways, I'll post a pic of it shortly. My camera is not here but I'll have it back tonight. I took the tail casing off at the field to show the guys the broken TT. Now the guys are going to check theirs. I'm going to put 2 bearing holders in this time. I only had one before and it looks like it was floating because of the length of the grind marks. Are these supposed to be CA'd in???
