I'm pretty sure my stock gyro has died. On the ground the servo behaves normally in rate mode, but in the air it feels like the servo lead has been cut, it jumps around and basically does not respond to stick input. I have tried head-hold, rate mode and moved the gain up and down and made sure the belt is set right.

I don't really want to get another eflite gyro but just want another inexpensive gyro. I'm considering an align RCE550 or a futaba G190. I don't believe the G190 has remote plug to adjust the gain from the radio which I'm not sure would be a big deal to me.

Can anybody recommend one of the above over another or have other recommendations.

For that heli, I would invest in a used 401, you can find them cheap here.

Well I've discovered that Futaba gyro is a rate mode only so that rules that out.

Is the Hitec HS-5000 worth while?

I was hoping to find a gyro for under 100 dollars. If it comes to it I might get another eflite gyro for the blade, in all fairness is did survive 3 or 4 harsh crashes while I was learning to fly.

Who ever told you the GY-401 is a rate mode, told you the wrong info.

The GY-401 is a HH gyro, I have four of them. You can set it to rate mode, but it should be used in heading hold.

The weakest part of the Blade 400 is the gyro and the tail servo.

I wouldn't buy another e-flite gyro. The little Blade can be a pretty good flyer if you put a good gyro and good servos in it. A better ECS is also a good idea.

If you move up to a 450 later, you can use all the upgraded electrics in the new bird.

I was referring to the G190 as a rate gyro only, not the 401.

I'm about to buy another 450 and plan on keeping the blade whole for a 2nd flyer, most of my reason for looking for a cheap gyro. I've got some upgrades on the blade and have flown other 450s and I'm pretty happy with the blade, but I'm not into 3d yet.

gyro

Jason,
I installed a 401B gyro in my blade, wow, what a difference, I liked it so much that I got one for my nitro bird to. Great little gyro and for 39 bucks u cant beat the price. Just google the 401b and read up on it or take it from me u will love it. Makes the blade 400 so much better. It is a clone of the futaba 401, u can download the setup instructions for the gy401 and use them cause the instructions for the 401b is not that good.

Whats a good gain setting? I have mine at 65 and it seems to still wag a little with fast rudder inputs and popping the collective.

Is what I described ok; a little wiggle with hard rudder inputs and quick collective inputs?

Not sure. It is usually to far away to see when I do fast piros, but I haven't noticed. I notice the small wiggle when I quickly transition from tail-in to left-side or right-side hovering. Also, when I pop the collective.

Shhh, don't tell the wife.

if its sliding out, up your gain a little. if its bouncing back and forth, set it lower. from what it sounds like, you should raise the gain to about 75% and give that a shot. if it bounces, back off 2% at a time.
