How do you check hover rpm when not using a governor? Tie the heli to a table and tach it?

Any tips please?

A helper and an optical tach.

You sight through the tach and adjust speed until the blades appear to stop through the little window, then you read the speed.

Never tie down a heli.

OR - depending upon the optical tach, set it on the ground next to the heli pointing up through the rotor disk (our optical tach doesn't have a sight glass etc.), get the heli light on its skids, hovering even and your helper reads the display.

OR - there's one which will mount on the heli and it uses large red LED matrices so, assuming you can see it whilst hovering you can do the job yourself.

Tach.

OK, 7-8 years ago when I bought my first heli, a nexus, i did tie it up to a table and revved it up. Never did that again. Wont do it again.

This tacho with a sighter: How does this work? Does the helper actually hold it up (while the pilot hovers it) and look thru a view finder?

Yep.

It has a shutter that spins. You adjust the speed the shutter spins till the blades appear to stop, then just read the RPM

Thats interesting. I will try to tape my tacho pointing towards the disc and ask a helper to take a readout while hovering... else just get a governor...

BTW, besides the GV1 which other governors are popular?

Pretty much any of the current governors are good. My personal favorite is the Aerospire Multigov

Another option is a logger like EagleTree. You're forced to d/l the data file before checking RPM, however it DOES allow you to fine tune the throttle curve through the entire flight range very easily. So, slow results, but much better data!

The tach like 306 posted is designed for plane props it will get you hurt if there is the slightest problem.

get the optical tach and always have a helper use it.

or an EagleTree data logger to give you a plot over your whole flight range.

I think about the hereafter. I go somewhere to get something, then wonder what I'm here after ?

I would recommend that you have someone help you tach it. It doesn't have to be a heli guy. The tach is not that hard to use.

You operate the heli, they operate the tach.

Multigov is a good gov. and does not require a tach to set it up.

I have a tach like the one that 30636086 posted which I clip on the tail boom of my helis . I used it to set up my TJ and TJ Pro governors .

At the end of the day , it gets dark .
