Anyone come up with any other canopies that will work on the caliber 5?

Also The stupid mounting tabs are a PITA! Is there a solution? Different mounting system you guys have come up with?

I saw a cal5 with a fibreglass canopy once. I believe it was a cal30 FT or a cal 90 canopy... not exactly sure.

LoL

I actually like the mounting system. I always start my heli with the canopy off. I just snap it on and fly.

Funny you mentioned this. This morning I was thinking of going to my LHS to get some stuff to make a fiberglass canopy.

Canopy mount

I too like the mount on the Cal5; it just snaps on. I like to access the inside quickly without having to unscrew any bolt.

Kyosho makes a fiberglass canopy but it's too much $$$... I'd like to know also what other canopy option for the cal5.

I just keep breaking the little tabs, maybe I'll get better at getting them on and off. I have only ever had a T-rex 450 that snaps in place so I'm not sure what its like to have to screw on a canopy.

Can you die the stock canopy and fins? I guess I would just like to have something other than white as my background.

I've heard about color-dying plastics. I've never done it myself but have seen pics of dyed plastics.

Here's a thread if you're interested.

I actually went and bought a glass kit. We'll see how it comes out.

You just going to make a replica of the stock one?

For the most part, yes. I have more than a few C-5 canopies, so one will become a mold. I've been researching the subject and found a lot of helpful info.
I'm going as simple as possible for the first attempt. I'd like to make it more narrow with less contour on the sides.
I already layed the glass on the mold to get an idea of what I want and need to do.
I will take pics throughout the process and post them, so long as it comes out half-way decent.

The first time is the worst time!

You're not "stuck" with plain white if you can run a can of spraypaint...

Lightly sand with 400/600 grit wet or dry paper -- WET to remove the shiny surface. Wipe down with lacquer thinner or Xylol, let dry. Apply a thin coat of Rusoleum Primer for plastics (comes in a rattle can). Read the instructions on the can, then use two to three light color coats of Rustoleum Enamel, again, read the can about when to apply the additional coats.

Let dry. The paint/primer takes 7 days to fully reach its full sratch and chip resistance. Apply any decals you want, then spray a couple of light coats of PPG Omni AU clear automotive urethane over the stuff to fuel proof it.

If you're careful, you will get a tough, glossy, fuel-proof finish.

Dave,
Any problems with chipping or popping off? I've been also looking for a solution, but I've seen some rator canopies painted with rattle can, and they have chipped easy.

Thanks!!
