I'm new to the 4 cell arena and 500 size heli's. I've got an HDX 500 SAH with a 1000w motor (I think it is the stock HDX motor) and was wondering if I went with a 2000-ish mAh battery, how long will my flight times be (planning on using it for hobby AP [not commercial])

Should I go with a 4-5K mAh pack,or will I get decent times out of 2K mAh?

Thanks,

Jon

4s 2000 is WAY too small a pack.
Amp draw will be high.
HDX500 needs a 4s 3700 to operate happily.
You should get 7 minute flights from that depending on the headspeed you decide to run.

To put the 2000mah pack size in perspective, the new Rave 450 runs 4s 2200, it weighs about 900g flying.
Your heli weighs about 1.7kg.....you can see where im going with this.

Good luck

I run 4S 2100 packs on a T-Rex 500, makes sick power for 5 minutes.

Just make sure to run them two at a time in series.

Seriously though, an 8S 2100 setup, geared for a low headspeed, would be very efficient and probably have longer flight times than a 4S 3700. Also cheaper.

the problem with the HDX though is gearing it to run properly.
Stock gearing will not work, you would have to run the Microheli 130t main gear as a starting point, then find a low KV motor to suit.
Could be done for sure, and yes it would be very efficient.

I would have thought you could go a lot more than 3700 on 4s? I use 3300 6s in my 500!

60% of the time, it works every time!

I fly an Align Trex 500 and I use Outrage 2200mAh 6S packs.
I get about nine or ten minutes of mild 3D flying.Eleven or twelve without idle up.

A full charge after ten minutes takes about 50-55 minutes with my Maxpro X6 charger/balancer.

Sorry,I was reading through too fast.
You mean mA's?Right?
I never even bother to look.Use,recharge,repeat.
I'm going out now to get a couple packs in before dark.
I'll make a note of it when I put them on the charger.

Sorry it took so long but finally got it.
I just finished a balance charge on one of my 2200mAh 25C 6S packs.

After an 8 1/2 minute flight my Maxpro X6 took 37 minutes to put back 1.67Ah.

Last post on this topic.Hope I answered OK.

Put back 2.12Ah after 10 minute flight.
I went ahead and flew the full 10 minutes on the other pack and put back 2.24Ah.

I would appreciate some opinions on these numbers if anyone cares to leave a little feedback.

Thanks ahead.

keep doing that and your lipos will die a FAST painful death.if you want your lipos to last follow the 80% rule meaning never put back in more than 80% of the rated capacity, for a 2200mah battery ,you should not use more than 1760mah

Thanks fender.
I know I'm using too much.
I've been going to the limit my ESC will let me go.
Sometimes I am fighting to land because I'm bone dry on power.
I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 35 or 40 runs on each pack.
I can't be sure.
I have only been pushing it for this poster though.
In all honesty,I usually go around 5 or 6 minutes.
I like to brag and it seems the truth is stretched sometimes.
Usually I'm so mentally taxed after 3 or 4 rolls or a couple flips that I need to put down and let my hands stop shaking.
My heli will go over 10 minutes on a charge but my nerves can't.
I just started 3D about 6 weeks ago.
A normal balance puts about 1.6Ah back.

I am however thinking of some bigger packs.
I am getting a little ballsier lately and hate to put down.

Thanks for the help.I agree with you.

The fender handle???Guitar man?
I am too.
That is my hobby or time passer usually.

Take care and have fun.

yes.I've been playing guitar for about 25 years and teaching and doing gigs for about 18

the esc cutoff is a LAST resort, not to be used as a daily flight timer.the best way is get a timer and time your flights.trust me,I am getting hundreds of cycles out of my lipos and I charge at 2and 3c.over discharge and heat are killers of lipos

I see you are using a dx7,it has a timer function, correct?,its there for a reason
