This is an ages old battle, the person posting can always sway the numbers in favor of their bias ? Cool Power at my LHS is $24.99 for 30%, $18.99 for 15%, Outrage XP 3000 mAH packs are on sale for $179.99?
7 Gallons of Nitro= 128 oz 21.3 flights per gallon X 7= 149 flights
I totally agree with you. Neither electric nor nitro powered heli won't be that much expensiver/cheaper than the other. And you are right about chinese lipos too. But if you do the calculations with the numbers you gave, and lets say that you get 150 flights with one lipo (thus favoring the lipos), you still get about the same price per flight(!). 7*25$=175$ for 150 flights and 180$ for 150 flights with a lipo. But you should also consider flight times. About 8 minutes of 3D per tank vs. 5 minutes of 3D per lipo. Or can you fly 8min of 3D with a lipo too? I'm not 100% shure but i don't think so...

And BTW, i don't want to start another nitro vs. electrics battle so i don't intend to write any further on this matter and i certailny don't want to start an argument with someone.

I was always under the impresion that batteries are chepaer on a smaller heli and therefore i've done some calculations and found out the following. With a 30€ (40$) Gallon, a 6oz tank and 8 minute flights per tank on one side, and a 90€ (115$) 6S lipo, 5 minute flights and 100 flights per battery on the other side, the price per minute of flying is the same (1 cent more with lipos). I know that there are many variables so took numbers, for which i believe are not too big or too small.
As stated above we don't pay anywhere near $40 for a gallon of nitro. You can get 30% for less than $20 all day long in the states which means electric is twice as expensive. You also need to factor in pack wear (diminished performance at the end of the pack's life) and the crash possibility. As always it comes down to personl preference. Not sure I would ever buy a T500 nitro. I would just stick with 50 of 90 sized helis especially since the T500 is not all that cheap to crash.

Oh I'm not upset or arguing, I'm just pointing out that the debate will rage for years to come, to respond to the 150 flights on a lipo.... no they do not give me 150 cycles, about 50 cycles at peak performance, and then another 25 at a very noticeable performance loss, then start to look for VC to come on after that!

Here is a quick list of the reasons I say this...

I fly 2500-2700 size lipos on my 500
I fly 4 min flights
I put back on avg. 80%
The packs last for 75 cycles( for the type flight I want to do)
I have not flown 3000+ size packs, and won't, I think they are a little to heavy for my flying style. but if you do the math, they should give me one more min of flight time, if I was to use them.
Again I love my 500 as is; but I will build a 500N and give it a try, I love my 600CF but I built a 600NSP and found that it really speed up the learning process, double the flight time at 2/3 the cost!
I think Align is missing the boat here, the 500 is such a popular machine and if there is a way to make it appeal to the "Dark Side" then why not rake in the dough?

At what C rate are you charging the lipos?

I spoked to the designer when I went down and saw them test flew the production heli last Tuesday and he told me that the heli in the video is a prototype and the production model, which I wanted to see with the canopy off but was unable to, is a better design for ease of assembly. He stated once the engine mount is installed on the engine, it takes about 2 minutes using 4 bolts to install the engine onto the frame. I also asked him about frame modification and was told very, very minimal frame modification.

I got to see both of the nitro 500's at R/C Depot last week. The first one had the engine with the glow plug facing to the rear of the heli. The second heli had the engine reversed, so the glow plug was facing the front of the engine (thats why the muffler was on the other side).

The nice thing about his conversion was that it was a very neat instalation. There was almost no modifications made to the heli. The only thing I noted was you had to grind a couple of recesses into the frame so the motor mount bolts would fit without hitting the frame. And most of the parts he was using were off the shelf, so that should keep the cost down.

The only drawback I saw was neither of the helis had cooling fans of any kind... As I was at the store, he was in the process of finding which fan and fan shroud would fit in the heli best so he clould complete the conversion set.

Hey a picture of the conversion kit installed into the frame is available on flyhelirus. I don't see a lot of frame modification. I've got to see in person how the engine is mounted into the frame. They are taking pre-order for shipping on April 6th at the cost of $390 for a complete pre-assembled kit (mounting bracket, OS37H and Revolution pipe). Just placed my order for one

Kiwi,

I don't know. You need to call RC Depot or email them. However, based on the website, it just a conversion kit and not an Align 500 ESP kit.

Just got home from picking up my conversion kit. I was asked to be the "guinea pig" to see how easy it is to convert the 500 from electric to nitro. I'll be burning both ends of the candle tonight and hopefully will get it partially assembled by tomorrow
