Now that we have some smaller pinions anyone have any thoughts about doing a high voltage protos?
I did some reading on a Mikado 400 that was running 12s. I was thinking more 8s. Maybe a 1300mah 8s lipo.
Really not sure what motor to run with this and would probably have to use a CC 45HV. Since I have not bought a kit yet I thought I would throw this one out if it is even possible to do. If it is possible then I would buy a kit without the motor and esc.

Just seems this might be a smart way to go cause everything would run a little cooler.

8s 1300mAh is kind of small for a 400 blade sized heli. I would go 1800-2000mAh 8s.

Looks like if you could use a 800KV motor and a 13T pinion (which I believe is available)
you would get a 2400 headspeed at 80 percent throttle.

But is it possible to get a 800KV motor for a Protos?

the stock motor is KV!

My main gear size was off so my math was off.

800KV * 28V * .80 throttle / 7.15 = 2506.293706

But would the stock motor handle 8 cells?

ummm, i think the stock protos motor is close to 800kv I'm guessing for 12S you would need closer to 400 kv as the protos was intended to run well off of 5-6S with the stock 800kv motor. the reason the kv is so low compared to other 500 size helis is the belt drive. It doesn't have as much reduction comparted to a normal system.

holy crap guys...the protos is an unboggable rocket on 6s! remember this is a heli thats size class was originally designed for 4s voltages. why go 8s? thats completely insane..and probably dangerous

Higher voltage isn't dangerous until you get up to roughly 48 volts. thats when the voltage is high enough to bridge the resistance in your skin. Overall, to a point, higher voltage is better as current causes losses, not voltage due to P=I^2*R for the same power output P, if you keep the voltage higher and the current lower you have exponentially less heat losses in your system, which means happier, long lasting components.

Yah please understand I was not thinking of using a 8s for higher headspeed. I was going to use a lower kv motor and the right gearing to keep the headspeed around 2200 or 2400 with the 8s. Everything would run a little cooler and more efficient maybe. Kind of the same concept Eeeky as a 10s A123 Swift 16. Or a Outrage G5.

8S 2100 is awesome on the T-Rex 500, so I'm sure with the right motor and gearing it would be great.

Yup, i bet 8S would work well compy, for the same reason 6S doesn't work in larger birds like the 600, not enough voltage to drive the current, and if you try to make up with more current the losses (read heat and inefficiency) become even worse. I thought it would be cool to do a 12S trex 500 or protos with a hv-30 controller and a 12S 800-1200 mah pack. if you could find the right motor that would be pretty cool. i"m guessign you woudl need something with a kv of about 400 or so which i'd bet you could find a scorpion in an airplane wind which could do that.

Hmmm a motor in the 500-600kv in 36mm can size would be needed for 8S though....

...Once upon a time there were Nitros, flybars and frequency pins...

The reason for higher voltage is cooler batteries. The Protos are way easy on the batteries even on 6s. We just need a better motor.... the stock motor has plenty of power but could be better with efficiency and less heat.

I'm sure the scorpion motor is more efficient, i saw a huge drop in amps for the same headspeed/performance when i swapped my trex 500 motor for the scorpion of the same kv.

I don't necessarily agree with this statement. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong but my flight times are only 4.5 minutes and my 30c 2500mah batteries come down really hot. Much hotter than with my trex 500 that flies for almost a minute longer. In fact sometimes I even hit the low voltage cutoff warning on the ESC (align) around 3 minutes!
