Bell 47 G-3

I got my frames and landing gear back from the painter and the powdercoat job looks absolutly beautiful (glossy yellow with a hint of orange). I don't think I have ever been this excited to get a bird in the air. But, I am not going to rush it, beacause I want her to be right the first time. I am building a replica of the Bell 47 G3 as owned by "Cloud Nine" in Australia as seen on Airliners.net.

Blade break

Hello Wayne:

I see that you built a blade brake for your 47. Could you share the details, I think that is a very good idea. Again that is great looking bird. I would still love to see some video of her doing her thing!

I just posted 4 pics in My Gallery and will be happy to e-mail to anyone who wants them. The white block is simply a piece of Delrin ,cut to size, vertical bored to form a concave surface for the main shaft. As you can see in the pic of the right side it simply "floats" on one screw thru the original hole in the frames. The "half bore" does not "fit" the shaft as I did not want it to stop the blades too fast and also to produce too much drag in the event it was accidently flipped on in flight. It only contacts the shaft in the center of the bore. The servo mount is self explained and uses the original holes in the frame. The pushrod is a DuBro threaded 4-40 terminal end for giant scale a/c tail brace wires with one ear cut off.I used a ball link on the other end for any misalignment issues. It's certainly not "HI-TEC" ,just something to produce a little drag. I did use a 140 oz servo and the lower part of the arm to produce as much torque as needed. You will need to "play" with the applied pressure .Just for reference the normal "spindown" time is about 2min 45sec w/o brake and 45sec w/brake.This will vary according to how much pressure of course. If you throw the brake on and shove the sticks in the top right corner it will sin down pretty quick. wayne

My Air-Crane is 16 kg. and it is very steady.
It has an unbelievable hover and flies very nice and easy
For the momment it has only half hour in the air and nowhere dust, but
I remember your warning.

Xavi, My Bell is running the 2360 blades,413 I think is the number, and weighs exactly 30 bs.,13.5 KG . This thing autos so nice it is unreal !! You can do a nice slide on scale approach or a full stop and set it down as light as a feather. It is really amazing as to the energy retention these blades have.Have you tried any low level autos with yours ? I would start at 1 meter and see how much energy is left in the blades. If you are not proficient in autos ,get someone who is to do it for you and then you learn how.I don't care how good you are or how well you maintain your chopper, you WILL have a need for an auto, sooner or later !

My 47

Well everthing is in, except for four Futatba 9206 servos, that are on order. I still get a kick out of just looking at the gleaming yellow frame. The powdercoat is some tough and shiney stuff. I will post some pics soon. Wayne and Joe, thanks for all of the pointers, I will incorporate them all.
