(I wrote a lot, again, lol. I have a couple questions at the bottom if you dont want to read the whole thing )
Its 9 degrees Fahrenheit out right now, and it was 5 when I started. I ran two tanks of fuel through it before I had a close call and decided it was time to take a break lol.
To start with, I had one hell of a time starting the engine. It was turning over fine then i "primed it" like i read (cap the muffler spin it for a second. Well that seemed to have flooded the engine, no more of that lol. So my motorcycle battery and starter didnt have the juice to turn it over once I unflooded it, so i had to cart the heli to the garage and crank it over there. Had a hell of a time still, gave it a little gas and spun it up, OOPS too much gas. Im going to have to replace the clutch liner soon i think!
So after getting it to stay idling on the way back out to the flight line in my back yard I spooled it up and took off, holy crap i forgot how awesome that feels
Got my training gear on, got about a foot and a half of snow with an inch or so of powder for softer landings! haha
Im tooling around hovering trying to keep it still with the little bit of wind we had, watching the smoke go through the rotor blades. Really freakin cool!!
That was the first tank, second i did a bit of poking around with the tuning (i had it set up to middle on the mixture screw and 1.5 turns out on the needle valve) i started leaning it out a couple clicks at a time, but then it wouldn't transition past idle. It was basically spitting fuel out the muffler the whole time, that's why i thought it was rich (snow was green wherever i took off or idled for more than a few seconds).
I got it to one needle position where the training gear were vibrating WILDLY like 4 inches from top to bottom. I landed that asap and put it back where it was took off, fine, closed it a bit more. Im kinda lost at this point. I think i will just get used to flying before i do any more tuning. My close call
was at the end of the second tank, i landed checked fuel had, about 1/4 to 1/8 a tank. I said to myself, i can make one circuit around the yard! So i take off, go to the left, turn away, come back across the yard turn towards me, JUST before it gets in front of me, the rpm skyrockets (sounded like it, scared the bajesus out of me) and the heli jumps like 5 feet in the air. Im so glad i used the sim for such a long time (like 3 months now i think, every day). I brought the throttle down to like 1/4 to stop it rising, rpm was still crazy high, i thought something broke so i hit throttle hold (im like 15 ft up at this point) heli ROCKETS towards teh ground, because im stupid and the hold and normal pitch curves arent the same, hold and idle2 are
(thats already fixed haha), so i bring the pitch back up and have a not so soft but not hard landing on the snow. With my heart pounding and my hands shaking i pull the trim down and cut the engine, stare at the heli for like a minute and then grin and go bring it inside!!
The sim probably saved me a good $100 right there!
That, is my adventure :P I have a few pictures and maybe a video, my mom had the camera out but she was freezing lol. Will post them if i can get them off her computer.A couple questions:
This is the first take off since i rebuilt it after buying used. The heli's nose drifted to the right constantly at a VERY slow slow speed, hovering, forward flight, ascending, descending, whatever i did. I havent looked into this yet on the internet, but I plan on doing it as soon as i finish this post. That is a gyro/tail/servo issue.
Next problem, POSSIBLY causing the first. Is the whole helicopter has a slow vibration, really just an oscillation that seems like its rocking in a circle. Like, nosedown right down tail down left down repeat, no more than 2 inches at the end of the training gear and maybe 2.5 at the tail boom. It does one complete cycle maybe 2 or 3 times a second. I honestly have no idea what would cause such a slow repeated oscillation. Main rotor is too fast to do that, tail way too fast and not the right axis, engine, WAY too fast. My thoughts are slop in the head because of the cold? I will do some research on this one as well, but please let me know if you have any suggestions or experiences!
