what about if the part you have is black already, but you want to colour it?
I would assume not possible right?
I've never tried that.

We work with plastics for a living. The good dye-able plastics are ABS and Nylon. Most heli stuff is a Nylon 6/6 of one form or another. Its porous. Delrin (Acetal) doesn't take a dye very well and the higher quality Delrin doesn't take at all. Been successful at dying acrylic also. The dye has to be very hot to do it. On any of it, its nearly impossible to dye a lighter color.

Its been awhile since I dyed my skids and I thought I would report back. It sounds from the previous post, that Lasershop may have already predicted the outcome.

After about 75 flights, they have substantially turned pink (I run coolpower) with a pale black/brown underneathe. In the shade, they look fine, but in the light you can really see the fading. I guess the moral of the story is- good for electrics, not so good for nitro.

Here are the results of my first attempt at dying anything. Here's what I did:

1. I used RIT Sunset Orange dye.
2. Brought the water to a boil in a large stainless steel pan.
3. Added the dye and then turned the burner off.
4. Mixed the dye well and then dropped in the 450 Pro skids.
5. Stirred the skids in the dye solution for about 30 seconds, took them out and dried em off with a shop towel. They were still a little too bright, so I put them back in for about 10-15 more seconds. Took them out and they were perfect.

I've only dyed my Raptor skids but saw no noticable warping. They did soften slightly when in the boiling water but seemed to return to normal stiffness and retain their flexibility. A flying buddy of mine did his stock Raptor horizontal and verticle fins with no warping.

ez2bgman:
Your skids look good and match very well.
