T-REX 250 › RCE-BL15X ESC programming...

My 250 came with this nifty little 15 amp speed control. I'm used to programming Phoenix speed controls using the Castle Link/Phoenix link cable.

So, I whip out the Trex 250 manual, find the "how to program your ESC" pages, turn on the X9303 TX and proceed to program away.

Yes, I'm able to program all six different settings, even verifying that the last function -- that of the programmable BEC voltage -- works as advertised.

The problem I've run into is that it doesn't appear that the first two steps -- calibrating the high and low throttle settings, works correctly.

My default throttle curve for the initial setup is a simple straight line, 0 to 100%, 50% at mid stick. Throttle channel endpoint settings are +/- 100%.

If I set my X9303 TX throttle trim all the way down, set the throttle stick at full ON, and plug in the ESC, it goes into setup mode as it should. The ESC then produces its "I've found max throttle setting" tones, and I then move the TX stick to full low (and low trim, as in all the way down). The ESC once again generates the "I've found the minimum throttle setting" tones, and I go on to program the remaining settings with no apparent problem

But when all is said and done, when I actually fire up the speed control to do its thing, the speed control does not start the motor turning until I'm at about 25% throttle setting. The position of the throttle trim doesn't seem to make any difference, low, middle, or full).

-----

My next experiment -- I went through the ESC setup again, this time with the throttle trim at MID position. I did the high and low speed throttle calibration steps, then finished programming the rest of the features without problem.

Once again, when I fire up the ESC to do its thing, the motor does not start turning until I get to about 25% throttle.

-----

Is this the way this ESC works? It simply does nothing with the motor below about 1/4 stick? Or is there some sinister hidden trick to calibrating the darn thing so that it uses the entire stick travel range?

I actually have a CC25 in an -ugh- plank...

The thought HAS crossed my mind to do what you've already done. But, it would be nice to make this one work. It would be nicer to get this one to work than to have to swap out those three motor connectors on the Phoenix for the ones on the Align.

-----

I've got a Trex 500 waiting for batteries to arrive, and it also has an Align ESC (but obviously a bigger, better one). I THINK it calibrated OK against my X9303, but I guess I should go back and double-check that, too.

Mine acts the same way. I think it is the soft start feature at work saving the gear train.

Pretty funky soft start mode, then, if it does nothing for the first 1/4 stick's worth of movement.

And when it finally DOES start to move, the soft start is WAYYYYYYYYYY too slow. And after the darn thing does get up to full steam, it also shuts the motor off at about the same point.

I'm thinking the ESC just doesn't calibrate correctly.

If you think about the size of the spur gear in this little heli you should appreciate the super slow start-up. Once in the air, switch to flight mode 1 and have a flat throttle curve programmed there while setting up the ESC for gov mode. Flies like a dream for me.

That is how the esc on my trex450 is. Nothing until 25% then is spools up slow. I fly around in idle up and when i land i switch back to normal mode and have no problems with the motor shutting down too quick.

I figured if I stick with the stock ESC I'll have some throttle curve in Normal mode just to get the darn thing spooled up and in the air, and as soon as I'm airborne will switch over to a flight mode with a flat curve up near 100 as my other Trex 450s have.

But I am going to have to go back and make sure the ESC on my new 500 doesn't have this odd behavior. That will have to wait, however, as the Zippy packs I ordered from HobbyCity are somewhere in the United States Postal Service distribution system, and I believe they are being held hostage by a postal clerk who didn't get what they wanted for Christmas!

Is this flybar version 250 or is it flybarless? If flybarless, what does it have for a flybarless controller?
