I received an used Hawk Pro. I'm not sure if it was a Hawk pro before the original owner bought it. I'm thinking it was the original Hawk. Anyway, I noticed on the swashplate (the part that turns) has an extra hole in it. It had a set screw in it. Thought it was strange I was just curious and tightened it. It locked the swashplate. I couldn't control aileron or elevator (disconnected from the linkages - done by fingers). It would go up and down. I then loosened it and removed the set screw. swash plate turned freely.

Why is their an extra set screw sitting inside the swashplate? I've been having wobble problems with the head - could this have been the culprit?

Is that meant for swashball freeplay adjustments?

I have never taken apart a swashplate but seems like when I tighten the set screw it rubs up against the round ball like part of the swash. I don't know if it is grinding into it or locking it. it spins more freely without the set screw.

what do you mean by freeplay adjustment? I do notice I can slighly (less than half a millimeter) jiggle the round ball part within this plastic housing (ring) of the swashplate.

how do I add a picture in this forum?

I'm on the century web site looking at the Metal Swashplate upgrade for the Hawk: Part # HI3146E and that too has it (in the photo).

Any idea what that is for?

both my raven and my hawk have the same hole in the swash, but they are empty. perhaps they are there for the manufacturing process. As for the wobbling in the head, that typically stemms from a degraded fit between the main shaft and the plastic headblock. Check to make sure the jesus bolt that ties them together is good and snug, and if there is still play you may look into replacing it with the one piece block if it allready does not have it.

Maybe it's a ball joint attachment hole for multibladed applications...

BINGO!

The government cannot give you anything without first taking it from someone else.

Second hand Hawk

I too recently picked up a second hand Hawk Sport. It had a bent main shaft and out of round swashplate. It had been in a few crashes and it had a wobble with the head off at low rpm you could see the swash plate wobbling while it spun. I had to replace the main shaft first to find the bad swash. The kinetic 50 swash is the same one but you nee to keep the long ball links from your old one as the Kinetic's comes with all short links. The Kinetics is like 6-8 bucks cheaper than the Hawk one at Heli World. If your Hawk is second hand, go over it with a fine tooth comb to make sure everything is tight. Check all ball links(found loose ones) Tail pitch bellcrank, If it has the tail gears, check the shaft end set screw as mine was loose and not holding the gear pin in. This could have caused the dreaded tail rotor lock up in flight. The pin will catch on the case and seize the rotor up.

As with any "used" heli, the purchaser should do a complete break down to locate and prevent potential problems from occurring.
