Well because twice now this past year I have been screwed, I wonder? Why is it that the guy who uses a Money order always gets screwed? Just yesterday I contacted an indiviual about a charger he had for sale. Great price and asked if he would take a Money Order for it. He said yes so sent it out this morning and low and behold he sends me a message this afternoon stating that he was sorry and an individual had gotten in contact with him earlier this week and swapped paypal info. Well he stated that he hadn't heard from this individual nor was there any money in the paypal account so he said he would sell it to me. Well apparently as of this afternoon now he has money in his paypal account for this charger. Great except my money order went out in the mail this morning already. So he said he would send it back. But I'm out the couple of bucks for the money order and postage. Not to mention a whole week to wait to get it back.
Something just not morally right about the whole situation.

Carpe Diem!!!

I'm really surprised the seller accepted money order in the first place. Money orders are a huge source of fraud, and why I strictly accept PayPal only when selling/buying from private party online.

Sign-up for PayPal, they aren't as evil as people make them out. I've had a PayPal account for almost 9 years now and never had one issue or fraudulent account.

In the end, sounds like the seller screwed up and shouldn't accepted payment from two people.

That’s not a problem with using a money order. It’s just a lack of integrity on the other seller’s part. Same thing happened to me with someone that would only take a money order. He sold the item to someone locally after I sent the money order out. Myself, I have had good luck with Paypal and use it often. But the bottom line is you still have to rely on the seller to come thought, money order or Paypal.

I've been stung both ways. By paypal, and by money order. Really, there is no fool-proof way. Feedback is the best bet, but you can still get burned.

In your case, though, the seller was wrong.

Hell... I can fix that.

Seller should have honored the first deal made.

well I do have a paypaly account. However, the deal was my wife had bought me a charger from the lhs. And of course it wouldn't do what I wanted it to do. So we took it back and got our money back. I just happened to see the charger I wanted for sale and thought what the heck. I don't have a problem using paypal but Money order was just convinent at the time. Oh well. I'll go on to live the next day so far. Oh and I did check out his feed back. All 2 pages and not one single bad feedback. Guess I just needed to vent a little, but still pissed to say the least.

Carpe Diem!!!

Personal Check Only

I have found the only verified way to exchange mone is through a Personal Check, deposited in the Payee's personal Bank account.

If someone WONT accept a personal check , deposit it,wait the required clearance time, then the deal is off.

Complete transparency, my home address, your home address, a deposit only check.

Any other method allows fraud, and the chance the payer or payee is pretending to be someone else, or somewhere else.

Any excuse to not use a personal check is the red flag of a deadbeat or someone who has something to hide.

Evey deal I have made, here on RR is been done by honest people with personal checks and complete transparency.

Using PayPal is not infallible either. I got scammed by a guy last July (he got a bunch of us). Paypal found the dispute in my favor, however they were unable to refund my money because it was irretrievable from the seller. Paypal states (and it is in their Terms of Service) that they will only immediately reimburse ebay transactions only; transactions done outside of eBay are covered by their "Best Efforts" policy, meaning they will try to retrieve funds from the seller, but refunds are not guaranteed.

That said, it's my fault I got into trouble in the first place. However, you still have to watch out. I still prefer Paypal, but I am much more skeptical when I see a 'too-good-to-be-true' deal...

You do have to be careful of money orders however they are still safe. If you are unsure about a money order when you cash it, have the bank call the money order number in and they will verify that it is legit. I have done this a couple times and it has always worked out. I normally use paypal simply for convenience. Normally people don't worry about the paypal fee and it is easy. No running to the bank to get a money order, just sit at the computer and complete the transaction. Knock on wood, I have never been taken by paypal. I would think that you could file a dispute through your credit card company if there is a problem. Hopefully I will never have to worry about that. Give the seller a little time, maybe he will return the money order and make things right.
