anybody used the jewel generator with a AR9100 DSM2 9-Channel PowerSafe Receiver?
http://www.horizonhobby.com/Product...rodID=SPMAR9100

I was wondering if this would work as a great backup system by hooking the jewel generator to it.

Have not tried this receiver on a heli as I didn't want to add weight
but maybe 2 batteries would be the same as adding the generator?

I'm building a new Gasser and would appreciate any help for the ultimate power system.

Thanks

Hmmm

I checked specs and that receiver shows input voltage of 6v to 10v. You would need a higher output jewel to work with whatever battery that you choose to work with it. Maybe a 6.9v or an 8.5v depending on what battery you need to use. Servo wise I would assume you'd want to use 8717's or something that can take this kind of voltage.

I was flying my gasser when the battery lead broke but I didn't know it and just kept flying. When I landed it was fine but when I shut the engine down all servos stopped working. Why ? The jewel generator kept every thing powered and happy without a battery (BROKEN LEAD) until I shut the engine off (good thing I didn't have to do a auto ! ).
Never having to charge the on-board battery is really nice.

I think about the hereafter. I go somewhere to get something, then wonder what I'm here after ?

hi
i am sure this goes without saying , but you would not want to use lipo ( lithium polymer ) with a generator setup , please correct me if i am wrong

i am just mentioning this because that RX seems to be meant to take two cell lipos as one option , and i could see this causing some confusion

Raja
Is there a higher output Jewel available? what type and voltage of batt would be recommended? can you run a jewel with lipos?

copperclad
I too was worried about type of battery

It seems no one has tried this yet and since I don't want to use a new heli as a Guinna pig what would be the best setup with some sort of redundancy for safety on a hard flown Gasser keeping weight in mind

Thanks all

hi TaleGunner
Raja's jewel is well proven , i would feel quite safe with it , you can run a smaller battery and still have a redundant system , and not have to worry about charging your RX pack

the jewel is simple , it produces enough power to run the RX and servos , as well as trickle charge the RX pack , remeber this is a well proven system and there are a ton of people here that swear by it

if you want to try a powersafe RX , you are going to have to keep both batteries charged , and i am not sure you would gain anything by adding a jewel to a powersafe system , other than un-needed complexity

to try this with a two battery system would get complicated , as i beleive the charging systems would have to be kept separated for both batteries , as in two batteries , two BECs and two diodes , as well as the jewel generator , and as mentioned , i believe lipos are out , HTH

Jewel with lipos

I setup some jewels that work with 2 cell lipos for a few guys. They are not extremely popular but yes it does work to the point where it will take the load off the lipo pack and keep you in the air.

The one I have the most experience with is a turbine camera ship that I fly regularly for a friend of mine. The jewel backs up the turbine lipo as well as the receiver 4 cell pack. He just charges the lipo normally before we go out and we don't worry about it dying running the turbine pump during the day. I have not seen any ill effects from that, its just taking the load off and doing a constant voltage charge while in flight is pretty much the same thing a lipo gets once it nears full charge (chargers switch from constant current to constant voltage).

If you charge the lipo before you go out then the jewel will not charge the pack at too high of a rate. Also select a lipo large enough to keep it within range of 1c charge rate.

thanks Raja
i stand corrected , that is the first setup i have read of that will handle lipos , i see you have a setup that handles a stock flight pack and a second pack for an electronic ignition , good work Raja , cheers
