Hey Guys,

Looks like I got a rave for x-mas !!! However it was the one with the Scorpion 6T motor. So here are my options for completion, can you please give me your advice as to what is the best, what is good enough, and what sucks:

Option 1:

Stick with 3S setup, don't have to buy a new motor, already have a couple of 3S batts so simplest and cheapest setup for me. I am a basic sport flyer looking to get better, at the level of loops rolls, tic tocs, but not up to funnel or pyroflip stage yet.

Option 2:

Go 4S, new motor and new batteries. Now I know everyone has been "raving" about the 4S setup and that it runs cooler, great for autos but is it overkill for me now, I mean I figure it will take time to get to be a proficient 3D pilot, am I just spending more money now to get the best setup without really needing it?

Tail Option 1:

Go for the futaba 401 or solid G or JR 7703. Now with the servo, all these gyro and servo combos are around $170-$200,

but I see that RC hover has this 2 Blade FES flybarless system where I don't even need a gyro.

So does anyone have any experience with the FES? Is this something I should look to get or it is not for the rave yet (I am just seeing it on the rchover website so have no idea about it yet).

Ok Guys, please any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

stick with the 3s setup for now til your skills out perform the 3s setup. my Rave is flybarless I wouldn't recommend it yet again til skills get better.

wait for the mini-g its what you want on the Rave or if you can't wait get a solid-g & 3500g servo

Hi Vipul,

Congrats on your new RAVE!

Here's one opinion....
Option 1:

Stick with 3S setup, don't have to buy a new motor, already have a couple of 3S batts so simplest and cheapest setup for me. I am a basic sport flyer looking to get better, at the level of loops rolls, tic tocs, but not up to funnel or pyroflip stage yet.
I would probably stay with Option 1 for now. This is how I started and totally loved the way it flew. It has plenty of power for all but the most demanding 3D flying style. Curtis flew the 3S/325 setup for a long time and he really did great 3D with this setup.

After all, you can always look forward to "Option 2" when your flying style demands more performance.

I'm currently using the Solid-G and it works just great! Besides, the Solid-G is such an outstanding gyro, I'll be installing it in one of my larger helis when the new Mini-G comes out, Come on Mini-G!!!

And finally, IMHO, I would probably hold off on going flybarless "initially" and just enjoy the stock setup. I think you'll be very surprised how well it flies, I was....

When you select one of the best (Solid-G) you simply get what you pay for. I also agree, the DS3500G is a great choice for TR.

BTW, many of the other high end gyros also have something extra (cables/display) you can purchase to program them with too.

Personally, I'd rather buy one great gyro as opposed to two cheaper gyros. I've always been able to tell the difference in the air! When something this good, works this well, it just brings a big smile to my face.

Vipul,

Your wife must be related to mine as I also got the Rave from "Santa" .

Mine will be configured with:
3S and -6 motor
Scorpion 6S Heli ESC/BEC
DS285 servos on cyclic
Spartan DS760 gyro with DS3500G servo on the tail
Radix 325 mains and Radix TR blades

Everything except the servos and gyro should be here today or tomorrow. My building table is clear and I'm ready to go

just build it and fly it -6 is just fine.

make sure you get bigger than a 35A ESC though.
I run a CC45 and CCBEC with mine.

the -6 is very power hungry.
you might want some really good 3S 25C batts as well.
I use flightpower evo 25s

as for Gyro at your level the 401 is just fine.
im running a 401 as well with a 9257 and I love it.

Rave gear

Just make sure the servos are metal geared servos. I saw someone mention using the jr DS285, we do not suggest this servo. Use the DS285MG this is the metal geared version.

Build it, fly it, crash it. Repeat as often as needed.

Brian...mine are the the MG's, but thanks for the reminder. Got started on the kit tonight, it's on the gear and main shaft/swash are done. Easy build so far and the manual is second to none.

Of course I remember you !! We're still waiting for you and your "crew" to make it up here to Katy for our funfly (Space City RC...first weekend in June again this year).

If you manage to catch the UPS guy, please check and see if he has my servos and gyro...with the holidays UPS is taking 2 weeks to get from Montana to Houston but USPS made it from FL to TX in 3 days (including christmas).
