I got a chance to test fly the Outrage 550 on 12S. I have a kidney stone that is killing me or I would have done more testing. This is the first day since the Orlando event that I was able to make it a few hours without pain meds. My set up is as follows:

2 6S 2500 30C Outrage packs in series
Scorpion 4025-630 Motor
CC HV 85 Speed Control
12 tooth pinion
11 of pitch
9 of Cyclic
Mikado Vbar
2000 Head Speed in Gov mode

I set my timer for 3 minutes to get an idea of my flight time. I flew a mild 3D flight, rolls loops and some piro flips and a few tic-tocks. This set-up gives great power and it pulls through manovers really good. Here is the kicker I put 700Mah back into the packs. This will equate to about 8 minutes of flight time which is amazing. The motor was 112F and the batteries and speed control were at 90F on both. It was about 78 degrees in Florida today.

I want to take a second to thank Gary Wright for the crash course in electrics, I hit this set-up the first time and it would not have been possible without Gary's help. Belive it or not Gary says the headspeed is a little low to get the motor into the sweet spot of the torque curve. I will try increasing the head speed in 100 RPM increments until I find the sweet spot. Gary was saying that the increase in head speed will make the amprage spikes during high loading smaller, which MAY make my flight time even longer. I am really glad that I did not let people talk me out of using 12S, it is great and I will continue to use and recomend this set-up.

QUESTION ?

Do you need to go with the V-BAR for this setup or can I use the standard head. Would like to know more about flight times and power when you get a chance to fly between the pain.

I only need one!

You can use this set-up with the stock head but you will get less flight time due to the rotational weight and aerodynamic drag of the stock flybar system.

Flight time...

Would it be safe to say I cold get 6 minutes of hard 3D with this setup on a stock head. 6 min is what I see for a 6 cell 5000mAh pack but would like to take advantage of a HV system.

I only need one!

two, 6s = 12s

Hi Mike

I already have a Rex 500 and Atom and am looking to get something bigger so was thinking of an Outrage 550

I was also looking to use my 6S 2500 25C electrolite packs in series so your 12S set-up seems perfect.

I presume i will not be able to use other batteries with this set-up ( 8 or 10s )?

I'm only sport flying (loops, rolls, flips)...Do you think this set-up and these batteries will be ok....am i going down the right path?

hi

so youre saying that 2 6s 2500 outrage pack in series which makes a 12s 2500 pack will run for about 8 min 3d flights? that is pretty good..

Hi Madgooner99,

If I was you I would stick to 6S packs. 550 size helis have plenty of power with this source. Get a Hyperion Duo and you can charge 2x6S's at once and fly all day

I was just trying to use my 6s 2500 packs in series to make a 12s....then i wouldn't have to buy new 6S 5000 ish packs...or can i use my exisiting packs in parrellel.

If so whats the better set-up.

I alreay have a cellpro 10 so i'm not in the market for another charger

Everyone has there own preference of course, but I can't really see the advantage of going HV in this size a heli. I would just run the 6s's in parallel.

6s or 12s I think it will go great. Can the Cellpro 10 do 2x6s at once? If it can then that would be the deciding factor for me.

Mike,
I like the idea of 2x 6s packs. I have a number of outrage 6s 3000mah packs and was wondering if you could tell me the distance in mm between the frames so I can workout if they will fit.

How are the flight times going, initially you gave an estimate, how is that working out in practise,

I now have my timer set to 5 min and I am putting back 1350 or so back into a 2500 pack. I will move my timer up to 6 min this weekend and let you know how many Mah I put back.

For those of you who do not think there is an advantage in a HV set up with the 550, you are wrong, plain and simple. I would like to see some of the numbers you have from YOUR testing. And if you are making that statement without first trying a 12S setup then I do not understand why you would even post about it.

hey. The concept is there on bigger machines . so I don't see a problem as long as you have a lower kv motor to install. I have always injoyed the hv kinda power In My machines. It's different kind of power band that you can feel In The cyclics as well

I'm hoping to go with a 550 on 12S myself...6S 2500 will work great in my Protos, and after spending megabucks on 6S in the Rex 600E, I'm not keen to go back to 100amp currents again...15-20 cycles on a pack is not cost effective...

Not alot new, just been flying the snot out of it. I have my timer set for 6.5 minutes and I am putting back 1750-1850 into the 2500 packs. I can say that I am very happy with this heli, it does everything well. I am going to do some more eagle tree logging in the next few weeks, as I just got the V3 and it will log the 12S set-up.
