would these servo horns work on miniature aircraft helis

they list pre drilled holes at 1 inch, 1.25 and 1.5, are those the right lengths for MA helis? or should I just use the HD plastic horns?

thanks in advance

On the Stratus?

Hi, merry Xmas

On what MA heli is it?
I just meassuret the servo on my Stratus.

Stratus (with normale ratio)
The distance from servohorncenter to the Ball should be ca. 20 mm

Stratus High Ratio (Bobby Watts)
The distance from servohorncenter to the Ball should be ca. 20 mm

The best horn for JR servos USED to be the Airtronics WHEELS. Unfortunately, they are out of production (big sigh..). You're kinda limited now. I'm surprised no one has made an aftermarket horn for JR servos. Perhaps the return would not be worth the investment.

On my Fury, I'm using the long HD arms.

Whoa.

The normal ratio Stratus sets up perfectly with SWH numbers in the 50's around the largest Futaba wheel with the molded-in hole. That radius is right at 19.5mm. Quote from the Stratus instruction manual:

"This kit contains a #0105 threaded ball to
install on each of the servo arms/wheels and
one to install on your motor’s throttle arm.
Except for the servo arm to control throttle,
each of the balls should be installed
approximately 20mm from the center of the
servo wheel/arm."

Knud, what arms are you using on a regular ratio Stratus that are out at 28mm? At that distance out from center, the 90 D angle of the pushrod off the servo wheels is defeated; it's right at 90 D when a 19-20 mm arm is used. That extra 8mm is a TON more distance.

ups, I measured wrong (to many bears here at Xmas), i did measured the bellecrank, and not the servohorn....

I found some old Futaba big wheels servohorn, that i did use back when my Stratus was a NON high ratio.
The distance is 20 mm frm center to the ball

OK good.

I just didn't want the original poster to go off on a wild goose chase.

I was thinking on using these on the new MA 90. looks to me like it uses the same horns as the stratus, just one sided. 1 inch is about 25mm so I would have to drill and tap a whole at 20mm. doesn't look like these will be worth using then.

thanks guys

I'm pretty sure there hasn't been anything said about the new ratios in the head. I wouldn't at all be surprised if the balls on the servo horn do not sit 20mm out on the new 90.

When I last looked at Nick's models, they were in the usual hole on the usual large Futaba wheels.

I checked them today, the closest whole to the center is about 19.5, the next whole is 25mm so they would probably work if I wanted to use them.

the wholes for ball links are taped for larger than 2mm, what size balls do you use on the servo horns?

Use these:

http://www.ronlund.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=heli&Product_Code=MA0113

Use a thin nut on the back of the arm and snap the link onto the closer in of the two balls. 4/40 is a bit smaller than 3mm as I recall, so you may need to enlarge the hole a hair. And no, MA doesn't make a long threaded single ball. They have a 3mm holed ball, but it's plated brass and wears VERY fast.

so I could probably retap them for 3mm and use those and 19.5mm out would probably work great.

thanks Dr. Ben

If you retap and get good threads, then just use the 4.5mm single 0105 MA ball with no nut (short threads). If the threads end up "iffy", then through drill the hole use the long thread ball that I referenced with a nut on the backside.
