I am working on a Trex 500 and I plan on using a Castle Creations phoenix 60 speed controler.

What do you recommend to power up the servos. An additional rx pack or a BEC using the motor pack?

crashrc, if your only getting another 60a ESC, may I ask why you don't just use the one that comes in the kit? It's a really nice 60A ESC with a robust BEC in which you can set the output voltage for 5 or 6V and then you won't need to solder in an external BEC or use an external rec bat.

BTW, I also have some of the CC BEC's in some of my heli's in which I don't have new Align 60A ESC in them.

WATCH OUT!!!!!!!!

I didn't have good luck with Castle Creations:

On my second battery the magic smoke came out!!

But, since I got the Medusa BEC, I have had nothing but Fun!!

Missle,

I like the ease of programming the Castle Controllers through the PC. I have fought with the align ESC on the 450 and listening to the beeps and moving the sticks in the correct position...FORGET IT!

I have good luck with Castle...but I see Jon the Rooster hasn't had such good luck.

Jon the Rooster, Did you ever find out what caused the BEC to smoke?

the stock esc works very good ,you can set the voltage for your servos at 6 v very easy ,i use it on 6 cells and it barely gets warm after 5 min, of 3D

I am using a Castle Creations Phoenix HV45 ESC on my Trex 500's along with Western Rototics Hercules BEC's and the combination really works well! You get a softer, smoother startup with the Phoenix HV45 ESC than you do with the stock ESC, so no jerking of the tail on startup! The programing is super easy with the Castle Link too! Also, you can set the Hercules BEC for 5 or 6 volts and it is almost impossible to smoke a Hercules BEC! Their Tech Support is great as well!

I have been using a Dimension Engineering Sport BEC on my 500 since I built it las January. It is small, light, and can switch between 5V and 6V output. It has also worked flawlessly. I like it so much I just ordered another one for the MSH Protos my wife got me for Christmas.

I have no idea why it smoked but just being the one bad one I guess?? Didn't care to fix it or try another one if ya know what I mean.
I took it as a sign from the Heli-Gogz!!

funny, i have had about a half dozen on various .50 sized electric planes, glow helis, and my trex 500, mostly on 6S and have never had a problem. Either you had a bad unit, or had a servo seriously stalled or something. Bases on the level of anal retentiveness of most heli guys on this site, i'm guessing the former as the latter would go against our retentive ways.
