I assembled my new outrage 550 yesterday. The plastic frame spacers wanted to crack when starting the screws into them. I have 2 cracks in the boom mount and the servos trays cracked. The front tail rotor belt pulley is warped and the belt alternates trying to come off the top then the bottom. I got the wrong brass shims for the main blade grips (3- 1.5mm and 1- 1mm).
Overall I like the heli, it is the perfect size, The build problems are a little disheartening.
Any tips on the front belt pulley?

You have to remember it is plastic not metal supports so you cannot torque down on them. You should be able to do basic repairs with some CA. I have found that if the belt tension is too high the belt will try to rid up the rim on the front pulley. If you are missing parts just contact Helidirect and they will ship you the missing parts.

agreed with HFG when going into plastic and your not taking it back out just use a drop of CA and tighten it until it is snug and that should hold very well.

I have a warped pulley as well. It is pretty bad, but I do not know if it is as bad as yours. I used some washers as spacers and put them under the two metal "guide" pullies. This helped the belt to hit more centered on my auto gear and eliminated most of the slapping sound I was getting. I also cracked one of the boom mounts as well. And I was doing my best to baby it. I did get one hovering flight on mine and the auto gear did not seem to be an issue. Buy maybe mine is not as warped as yours.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will try to shim the guide pulleys to help center the belt.

put a little light oil into the plastic parts that the tapping screws have to tap. Thread the fastener in a bit, back it out then in farther. That and the lube may prevent any cracking.

If the tapping thrads are cutting all the way into the sides of the hole, it spreads the hole with a lot of pressure and something has to give. A little oil goes a long way to prevent this from happening.

My build went pretty smooth, although I replaced the tight ball links with Align, and I did experience a small crack in the boom mount. I'm reserving judgement on the cheap looking paddles, they may perform well. I really like the design of this bird, but am I the only one that thinks the plastic parts are c---. If this was an Align product it would be getting flamed alot for the plastic quality.

I think it will be a very good machine (maybe great), but I'm not ready to line up yet to drink the "it's perfect" kool aid I think a few are sipping! :-)

You are not alone. That is definitely the area that could use some improvement. I have about twenty flights on mine, and my links seem to be holding up. They definitely have bedded themselves in, and are no longer tight. I am glad I did not size them.

A friend has just built his Outrage 550 and has a badly warped front tail pulley. It has a good 3 mm of movement through a rotation. Way too much for it to be flyable as the belt will quickly flog out on the pulleys.

Anyone know if there is a fix in the works for this?

Paul.

The warped pulleys are a known issue. Most of the warped pulleys aren't bad enough to prevent flying with them, but if your friend's pulley is that bad contact Helidirect and they will replace it. One of the best part of Outrage products is the great support behind them so take advantage of it and get a new front pulley Personally i'm trying to convince Charley for a Delrin front pulley upgrade part

Try shimming the two guide pulleys up a little bit, play with the belt tension, and run it a very low head speed for a minute or sol and it will break in a bit.

Saying all of that maybe yours is warped much worse than mine, but I did not think that mine was flyable at first. It is holding up fine so far.

I've had a few missing or broken parts. Contacted Helidirect and they sent out replacements. I'm embarressed to ask for anything else, but I put the head into the frame tonight and I too have the warped pulley. I'm going to sit on it for now and try it out after the tail assembly gets built up to see how it goes. Only about 1/8th of my pulley seems bad, but it dips down quite a bit where it does go out of sorts. Might not be bad once the belt gets stretched though. Jury is still out on my belt guides.

I also have a bit of play where the aileron bellcranks mount onto the control shaft.

one of My main grips get too tight if I tighten the screw into the spindle too much. There is almost 1mm where the spindle shaft is recessed "under" the thrust bearing on that side. Other side is flush. I tighented it down as much as I could w/out impacting the grip smoothness. Will my loc tite hold it there???????? Or should I get a new spindle shaft?

Overall the heli seems like a great design. Many of the parts seem very high quality, but I've had more than a few snags as well. Starting with the manual being for a G5 instead of a 550 lol.
Oh well, I"ll get by, and with the IL weather being what it is, I won't be flying anytime soon anyway

During my build I took the head apart to inspect for grease and locktite. As it came out of the box both grips moved very freely. Reassembly was a real pain for some reason. I too had a problem with one side being too tight if I tightened it properly into the spindle. After taking it apart about four times, it finally went together in a manner that again felt right. Seems touchy for getting both sides just right during assembly.

Hey guys. I just want to say I'm watching this thread closely as I'm debating between getting a Logo 500 or Outrage 550 to replace my E550 Raptor (it's a tank). So far I've mainly been looking for comparisons in flight characteristics and weight however these build/quality control issues are important too.

Seeing what some are saying, I should probably stay away from the Outrage 550 until the next fresh batch from the factory gets into the pipeline. Hopefully all the issues will be corrected.

Thanks for your input. Keep us up to date!

I would not hesitate to get the 550 again now. While there are a few issues, these can be managed. This is a very good bird and I think you would find it flys like nothing you have ever had your hands on.

I have 13 flights on my Outrage 550.... no problems. A lot of times you will have a blade grip that's harder to turn than the other. After first spool up, everything should seat together. Honestly this is my new favorite heli to fly. No more Logo for me.... at least not for a long time.

Well, my belt broke on flight number 45. No warning, it just broke. I am still not sure if I had it too loose, too tight, or it jumped because of the warped gear. I am getting a new gear and hopefully it will be a bit better. I would still recommend the helicopter, it flies really well, and has tons of power. It definitely flies like it is on rails. I am sure the outrage crew will fix any of the snags, and if you are debating between the 550 and a logo look hard at the difference in the price of the parts.
