I was doing mild 3d last night and my heli died all of a sudden, auto`d down no prob, but the speed controller had lit up and was shooting out flames from the back of my heli on the way down, looked like an after burner on a jet.

On inspection..

All my servos and gyro work, no damage to heli except obviously the melted ESC.

The Esc is melted cheese. ( Im hoping thats all Il need )
My main concern is much of my wiring servos e.t.c are blackened due to the fire..( I will check to see if its just soot and not burned later this morning..

My frame seems to have slightly caught fire but when I scratched a section of the burnt black stuff of its still silver an intact.Lucky.

QUESTION. 1 My motor should be OK right???

2 What the hell causes this to happen anyway???

3 I javent run it obviously, the damage seems to be isolated to the ESC, should my mootor be OK????

3 Im thinking the 100 amp Align, but my LHS has this speedy which will give me the option to go 8s if I buy a scorpion 4025 890kv either now because I find my motor is also damaged or later, I cant afford the scorpion ESC at nearly $300, Its either the Align and be stuck with 6s or some cheaper Esc that will do 8s..

http://www.takeoffandland.com.au/pr...08da24aec0aebb1

This speedy is HobbyWing Pentium Brushless ESC 80A-HV 12Cell Lipo at $150...

PHOENIX 85 HV SPEED CONTROLLER (Castle creations) $279.00(just not sure I can come up with that kind of bicky`s right now.

Just wish the damn Align 100 would take 8s.

Any advice will be appreciated very much guy`s, this is a new one for me..

[EDIT} I think Ill be asking my dear old mum for a loan on this one and 270 bucks is a bit rich just before christmas......

**** **** **** ****!!!!!!

just removed the motor and all three wires are burnt down to the copper wiring.. cant see how I can fix that.

Looks like need new motor now aswell, I think the scorpian 4025 is prett much the same price as the stock align, may aswell go that rout and gear up for 8s later down the track.

Also wondering now if the motor could of shorted causeing the ESC to catch fire??

I was pushing the heli pretty hard by my standards when it lost power, 2 hard backward flips followed by 2 stationary sideways flips all in a row. Was haveing a great flight, really starting to get up and boogie like I see all you 3d guys do on the vids..

I had an NEU seize up on me and at the time, I didn't think about the throttle hold. Even though the motor stops, the ESC is still going and generating a lot of heat to the point where it goes up in flames. Your ESC fire probably occured after the motor failure. So, regardless of what it looks like, you need to get the motor repaired or replaced. The ESC will need to be replaced but that was secondary to the original problem.

The lesson learned here, which I also learned the hard way, is to activate the throttle hold on these types of shut downs. That way you prevent additional damage if it is a short or seizure.

Spitfire,

You should be able to replace the wires from inside the motor. I've seen it done on a few motors. But your problem may have started there in the motor, so it's your call. As for the flames shooting out of your ESC. Most ESC have a capacitor or two inside of them. Sometimes they are used like and electrical shock absorber to help keep voltage spikes down to a minimum. These capacitors are filled with an oil to keep the temps dowm. If they overheat they have been known to catch on fire so that could have been your flames. One way to know if you've burn up a capacitor is they give off a really nasty smell when burnt.
Definately replaces the ESC. Maybe you could send the motor into someone and see if it can be tested and re-built.

Ted

I always have fun. Some times are more fun than others.

Thankyou very much, I the more I think, the motor coud have gone first. I dident notice any flames when it cut out just on the way down. luckily the fire went out after a couple of seconds on the ground, for a moment there I thought I was going to loos my whole helicopter.

Im really interested if anyones heard or knows anything with this Hobbywing ESC.

HobbyWing Pentium Brushless ESC 80A-HV
http://www.takeoffandland.com.au/pr...08da24aec0aebb1

Sure would be the way to go for later 8s.

I think Il buy the Scorpion SCHK4025-890KV Motor.
http://www.takeoffandland.com.au/pr...08da24aec0aebb1

I plan on running 6s until my packs start to die then move up to 8s, does this sound like the way to go????

Might have to buy the stock 100 amp Align, and buy the pheonex 85 later when can afford the extra dollars.... Hell I dont even know where Im gonna scrape up th 300 bucks for stock esc and scorpian motor

Is the 890 kv the best for 6s and 8s, or the 1100?
Could someone tell me which scorpion is best for 6s and 8s as far as KV?????????

Get the HV85 and be done with it. It's $185 for Towerhobbies.com. If you join their little club you'll be able to get about $25 off of that price usually (they send out coupons). Let me know if you want and I'll forward some to you.

You can also buy them used on RR for between $100 (real good) and about $150 (too much). The right price is $125-$130 (usually what reasonable people are trying to get for them.

The best thing about the HV85 is, if you ruin it in a crash Castle Creations will fix or replace it for $70. So it's really the best ESC for our heli's.

BTW, those stock Align ESC's are known to go up in flames.

Yup looks like the castle creations is the way to go..
Just starting to dawn on me im gonna be nearly paying as much for decent esc and motor as I did for the complete GF 600 kit and its all pretty depressing..

Problem here in Aus at the moment is the exchange rate due to all this economic trouble you guys in the US are haveing.

Im looking at $280 for the CC85 and $164 for the scorpion.
$444 dollars, Im a student. dont mind hitting my mum for a bit of a loan here and there but nearly 450 bucks is pushing it a bit.

Might be takeing a break from the hobby for a little while the way its looking..

{EDIT}
I just used a currency coverter and $185US comes to 270.47AUS add 20 bucks shipping.

Im checking out Tower hobies now.

Just one more quik one..

since it looks like wont be useing my packs for a while, is it ok to discharge them with my charger to 23 volts? never had to do it before.

Or alternatively just get one of my mates to fly each one for about 3 minutes so there not fully charged?

If I can come up with the cash maybe flying again in a few weeks, but who knows maybe couple of months.

hehehe, just to rub salt into the wound I have a Kontronic Jazz 40 and kontronic Twist 37 never even used out of the box, both of which cost more than the scorpian motor and cc85 esc, both completely useless to me as i dont have a 450 size heli...

+ 1 for the CC HV 85! I love mine, plus they will fix it if you get hit with a rocket in flight again...hehehe

Seriously, good luck, and if you can't afford the HV 85, check out the Phoenix 80, it's good as well, and will handle a 6s set-up no problem. Plus they will still fix it if you know what happens. Check out helidirect, they may be cheaper than tower, with no membership garbage.

Also like gravity sucks said, you could consider getting a used HV 85, 'cause if you ever have a problem, once again they can fix it.

Thanx for all the advice, if I could I would grab a stock align 75 amp and Align motor and just hope it hangs in another 5 months.
But everyone here is out of stock. Ive done the math and with shipping and exchange rate it works out almost exactly the same nearly to the cent...

My options(in stock at LHS) is either

scorp 4024 890kv and Align 100 amp ESC.
scorp 4024 890kv and cc85 ESC.

He has scorpion motors with KV rangeing from I think 500 up to 1100 maybe higher (havent got the page up right now)

Im just assuming the 890kv is the one as thats what most seem to be talking about, in reality I may never go 8s but would like to have the option if it comes to it, this said is the 890kv suitable for 6s setup???

EDIT.. Hmmm at this point one of them Trex450s is starting to get more apealing, petty cant get one without the esc and motor, then I could use my Jazz40 an Twist37.. Ill get the cc85 and scorp somhow even if I have to beg borrow and steal, Im worse than a heroin junky when it comes to this hobby.

If you are interested, I have a spare 600l motor I would sell you, for 25 dollars. It is brand new, and I would even ship it to you for that. I know that doesn't help your esc problem, but it's a start.

I also have a used HV 85, I might consider selling, it works great, just is an extra. I would be willing to give you both, the motor and the esc for, 125.00 shipped. I guarantee, they both work. Just another option, if you want. I will pm you with this info, as well.
