Anyone have this problem?

First, the setup. 2 Fury Extremes w/ YS91STs, running at 8:45.

Using the 33" graphite boom has had great results with the old enclosed tail rotor gearbox.

Now with MA getting away from the graphite boom, installing the aluminum boom produces a resonance in the tail, giving it this ugly howl. What's worse is when applying right rudder, the extra torque on the tail causes it to twist in the mount!.

The resonance starts at around 1650 RPM and continues through 1850 rpm. Below 1600, it's smooth.

Cranking down on the boom clamp at the fuselage end an unbelievable amount doesn't even fix it.

And yes, the T/R shaft is straight, blades and grips balanced on a high point etc etc. I have even swapped booms to different machines, changed torque tubes from single to dual bearings, changed T/R gear ratios and the only thing that consistently gets rid of the resonance is the graphite boom.

Make sure the boom is not pushed all the way in, just in case you did not know. The boom needs to have the plastic holder sanded with a rough sand paper and the boom too, put tape around the boom where you don't want to scratch it. Add a small screw in the frame through the plastic into the boom making sure it does not contact the torque tube. Did you lube the torque tube ends? The squeal is probably from a bad bearing, which can also set a resonance up.

Thanks for the response, but perhaps I should rephrase the question.

Does anyone still use the enclosed Extreme tail box with a 33" boom?

Hi,
I'm using the closed box on a 33" aluminum boom on both of my tempest's. Pull your tailboom mounting blocks and put a light coat of RTV silicone on them where the boom go's. reassemble and let it dry overnight. This will stop your resonance problem and your twisting problem.....
Thanks,
Marc
