Finally got the call from Heliproz.

Spectra-G w/tempest head is in the mail.

I'm very much looking forward to this build. Next step is to start gathering everything else I'll need to complete the Heli.

Just another crappy day in Paradise....Aloha!

HeliProz told me mine is on the way too. Now the next order of business is getting a new Zenoah 270PUH engine to put in it.

That was quick CNC . Mine was shipped out the day after yours (Ground) . You must have paid a pretty penny to get it that quick .

USPS. If the timing is right, I can have package in hand in 3 days. It actually came in on the 26th.

Mail man was very covert. I was waiting, saw him drive away and was bummed I had to wait until Sat. When I was leaving the house 2 hrs later, it was sitting by the front door. Needless to say, I never made it out of the house.

I'm waiting for UPS to come to the door any minute now. I'm so excited!!!

What is the latest news with the rear mount Zimmerman muffler? Last I heard, Raja had sent his prototype to Alex and was waiting for Alex to convey the final dimensions to Mr. Zimmerman. Should be a great muffler. Raja is a real precise technical guy, so whatever measurements he gives to Alex, if Zimmerman follows them exactly, it will be the perfect muffler.

Sweet , thanks for the update on the muffler status jrock . Hopefully by the time the build is done the muffler will be close to being completed . Does anyone know the rough transit time for the muffler to reach the U.S from overseas ?

..depends how folk send stuff....

I've had shipments from HK by ems get to my door 48hrs from ordering. I've had stuff similarly from the US but also had it go and sit in customs for 10 days on arrival. And one packet from Raja took 3 mths to reach me.

This way outbound has the same issues. There's always the option of paying.

Tracked express shipping is the most reasonable option. Best reliability and most expensive is DHL/UPS type. Cheapest is ordinary post... so long as no rush (and heaven forbid it goes by sea...)

Thats a nice feeling that, getting that package that contains your next project.
My Predator arrived here courtesy of someone kind enough to include it as part of their luggage allowance. It was quite a big box, attracted a lot of curiosity...especially as the box started to change into a heli over the next couple of weeks.

Same here with packages of parts for example...no rhyme or reason...some itmes take ages some take 10 days or so...which is quick for living in these parts...I tend to over order lest I get grounded for a while

Got my Spectra-G box in the garage now. Thanks Mr. UPS. The box is small, but the parts inside are big. Way bigger than I imagined them to be. The metal parts are quite heavy--no crappy injection molded plastic anywhere. Everything looks to be really high quality. My only concern is the canopy. It is made of very thin fiberglass. The rear "ears" already have some cracks in them, and the gel coat is starting to flake off on the edges even though I just pulled it out of the box a few minutes ago. I think I will need to laminate some carbon fiber strips inside the canopy before I attempt to do any painting on it--otherwise the entire canopy will just crack the first time I try to mount it.

Hi

"..I think I will need to laminate some carbon fiber strips inside the canopy.."

Thats not a bad idear, I did the same on the rear ears,
as you call them, and I allso did it where the conopy
mounts in the front.
I used glasfiber, but carbon will be just as fine, and
ligther

jrockstuart,

My canopy is the same way. Minor cracking in the gel coating in the rear ear area. I was going to fiber glass it for more support.

It sure is beafed up arount the mounting lugs, very thick glass there.

Wait until you build the head. It's huge! 2" wider than my Predator.

Is it me, or is the Spectra-G canopy kind of ugly? I'm not quite sure what those long indentations are on the sides of the canopy, or what that little lip is for near the bottom--but it looks strange. I'm thinking when I get handy with the fiberglass/CF work on strengthening the inside of the canopy, I might have to add a little Bondo to the outside too. Maybe I could fill in the channels on the sides with Bondo to make the whole thing smooth? Anyone else feel this way, or does the stock shape of the canopy grow on you over time? I do like the little "eyebrow" like buldge on the very top of the canopy near the rear of the windscreen.

..you'ld have to upload a pic so we can judge your ugliness... as to the spectra canopy.. those things are a matter of personal taste.. Can't say I'm bothered by it one way or the other .. but then I think the Predator canopy is beautiful and others hate it..

My original was weak on the seam ... so it may well be a good idea to finesse that and reinforce internally with glass matting as i had to do in the end.

I do have a 'one for best' canopy from arizona heli that I think looks nice .. since it's properly painted. My DIY repaired original .. after a crash and apint job .. well it is ugly .. but functional and visible

I like how the Predator gasser canopy has an actual see-through windscreen, and not a simulated windscreen like every other company's canopy. I thought the Raptor 90 canopy Eury put on his Spectra looked nice, but it seems that Thunder Tiger makes a lot of different Raptor canopies--and the ones with the little hole on the side look hideous (in my opinion). I will certainly take your advice and reinforce the seam inside my Spectra canopy. Maybe the shape of this stock canopy will grow on me over time. I seems like it will be really difficult to fill in the channels on the sides of the Spectra canopy with Bondo and have it look nice due to the extreme fragility of the canopy. Doing body work on a rigid car fender is one thing, but doing body work on a flexible heli canopy is probably beyond my abilities.

Short of Airwolf (which stands in a class by itself), offhand I can't think of any 3D "pod and boom" helicopters that have really nice looking canopies which might fit on the Spectra. Of course a good paint job can make anything look good. You could probably send Arizona Heli a 2 liter Coke bottle and it would come back looking amazing.

I think the Pred canopy is about the best looking also and agree with jrockstuart that the Spec-G canopy is a bit on the ugly side. A good paint job should sharpen it up a bit. Who can I send it to for a nice coat of paint?

But this time, I'm not going to base my success on a good looking heli. From what I can see so far, the Spec-G is going to be easier to setup and less problems in the long run.

..depends where you are and what you want, I suppose.

I ordered one from AZ heli when spectra canopies were unavailable since he makes his own.. the cost of it with a basic spray job wasn't that much more than a new canopy and the cost of rattle cans would be.. and it came back nicer than my efforts would be.

I did do a Preddie canopy.. the one without see-through.. myself with the rattle cans and it looks quite good.. but with primer, undercoat, 3 colours and then clear coats.. you're looking at least 6 cans-worth of expense (or buying a compressor). Cans here aren't that cheap.. about £5 or $7 each, then masking tapes and tack cloths.. it all mounts up for what can end up 'iffy'. But I suppose it becomes a new skill..

I haven't opened anything up yet, but looking inside the plastic bags it seems that there are not a lot of parts to put together. The head on mine came from the factory already half finished. I'm probably not going to start building anything until I can get one of the new Zenoah 270PUHs referenced in the "Oh My" thread. No sense in spending $500+ dollars on a Hanson G26 3D Max only to find that the new modified 270 is the best thing since sliced bread. I'm still waiting for Raja to get back from his vacation and give all of us the go ahead on ordering the Zimmerman rear-mount muffler from RCMarket. After seeing all the problems Excalibur had with his muffler, I want to make sure mine is built exactly to the same specifications that Raja prescribed.
