recently at hickam afb hawaii the same situation happened at 0800 in the morning.so there was a complainer who wrote to the local paper about jets flying over on a saturday morning wakeing up everyone and bla bla bla.well to come to find out it was a flyby to reconize the passing of our soilders who had passed in the war of iraq who were from hickam afb hawaii that had died serving our country.the 4 star general wrote back to the paper for whoever wrote this in the paper that if he had the balls to come forward to get an a$$ chewing for the respect of our soldiers who had passed serving our country to do so.well he never came forward and for the next month every saturday at 0730 they flew that same pattern to reconize our soldiers who stand fighting for our country.amen and god bless for all who serve and have served for our country!!!!!

wife said" either its me or the helis"...damn it was sad to see her go!!!

erm... so by what definition of our measurement of the time of day is 09:11 EARLY ??

OK I have difiiculty in getting out of bed in the morning and like a lie-in whenever I can (weekends I usually get up around 11:00 ) but anything after 09:00 is not early IMTO (in my Tired opinion)

Even if someone works nights there plenty more hours to catch up on sleep.

I am biased,,,but JET NOISE IS THE SOUND OF FREEDOM!!

I bought a house in 1997 right under the final flight line for Offutt, few miles out from the numbers. I knew when I bought it that the RC135's and other aircraft would basically be using my house to line up on the runway. The RC135's were loud before replacing the jet engines with high bypass turbofans. BUT I was observant enough to recognize where I was when I bought the house. Never bothered me or my family and I actually liked looking at all the different antenna configurations as they'd fly by and giving a rating on how close the pilot was on his lineup

If you don't like living near an active airfield then don't live near an active airfield!

Complaining about airplanes that were there when you bought the house is as stupid as complaining about the train tracks near my current house. What are they going to do, move the train? NO! If it was an issue I shouldn't have bought the house.

Great answer from the Air Force officer!

and +1 for Divot's response.

Yeah thats the same as people buying a house next to a dairy farm an then complaining to the township about the smell!!! Then the farmer sells out to a developer then they complain because they have to look at houses.

Damn that ground is hard! When's the right time to get out of this money sucking hobby?

I used to have a summer home under the flight path of Otis Air Force Base on Cape Cod, MA. This was back when the 102 FIW was flying F106 Delta Darts. I used to love the sound they made, and at times it would seem like I could reach up and touch them, as they were so close. My neighbor was a retired member of the 8th Air Force, and when I'd see him some mornings, he'd say "How'd you like the sound of freedom this morning at 0630?", knowing full well that I'd probably have ran out on my back deck in my underware to catch a glimps of the flyover.

Those F106 were majestic birds in flight. I never tired of watching them. I remember one day one was flying a holding pattern over the lake. I was out on my watercraft trying to chase along with it. Wondering if they were watching me as I was watching them. When parallel, I jinked the watercraft side to side. To my surprise and amazement, the pilot rocked his wings. Talk about feeling connected! To this day it remains a high-point in my memories.

Early on in my property ownership there, I discovered you could call the base and make an appointment for a base tour. I used to try and do one at least once a year, just to go hang around the aircraft for a while. Wonderful people at that base, wonderful people

When I read stuff like this I always get choked up . I think people take for granted that we will always have freedom. They do not know what it takes to keep our freedom and I'm sorry that someone was at the mall and had to shut up for what a split second as jet flew over meanwhile someones family member died for their freedom .I hope she feels like **** for the rest of her(FREE) life for this letter.

I stole it ,flew it and gave it back ;)

I love stories like this, it shows there's still some normal people left in this world. I would also love to have F 16s flying over my house.

LOUD AND PROUD

I live on a large lake in northern NJ there are always interesting flybys,

the one that stands out was a B-17 rounding the cove at 75' off the deck

Its amazing how fast you forget what your doing when you hear the old radial engines in sync

ahhhh Getting goosebumbs just thinking about it

life is good today

Well Written Response

First, a prayer for Capt. Fresques and his family and friends, we can never thank you enough.

Second, a giant kudo and thank you to Lt. Col. Grant L. Rosensteel, Jr.
USAF. Glad to see you practice situational awareness on the ground as well as in the air. Fly safe forever.

Third, to the complaining writer, engage brain before opening mouth or sending email to the newpapers. Capt. Fresques made sure you were allowed to express yourself freely, so practice it wisely.

Cool response. But it is odd that this seems to be a re-hash of an incident that happened in 2005 and that the recent letter seems to have added text and a different author.

This appears to have been added in the 2008 version along with the change in the name of the author:
Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you.....Jesus Christ and the American soldier. One died for your soul; the other for your freedom
Again, here's the Snopes link about the 2005 story:

http://www.snopes.com/politics/military/wakeup.asp

The author was Lt. Col Scott Pleus and the incident happened on June 15, 2005.

I wonder why it was changed and "updated"? The original story was very moving. And I am not saying Alan Sr. changed it, I am sure it was a cut and paste from the Internet.

In a similar vein, a couple of weeks ago I was running a boat at Legg Lake in Whittier Narrows Park in LA. To the north we saw a B-2 bomber making numerous low passes and wide lazy circles (clearly a holding pattern). It was a Sunday and a very odd place to see any air traffic, let a alone a B-2 bomber. Come to find out that the person in the Air Force who was instrumental in getting the B-2 program into the air had passed away and this was part of the memorial service.

Nobody complained about the noise this time!! The B-2 is VERY quiet!
