...is anybody taking R/C videos with hard drive camcorders that use the new AVCHD format? - i have a Canon HG 21 (120 gig. hard drive) and i'm using Adobe Premiere Elements 7 - when i compress it to a .wmv file the files are huge! - any ideas on how you get the files down to a usable size on the internet?...

...do you mean the Windows Movie Maker encoder? - Windows Movie Maker doesn't support the AVCHD format...

The problem is in the codec and related settings used while encoding. Unfortunately there is not one-encoding-method-for-all. It involves some explicit configuring. To give you an idea of the quality vs. size, it is the same codec Mark Ryder uses for his latest videos. But, naturally, the video will only look as good as the hardware used to record the video.

If you want the best picture per compression available today, use the Microsoft VC-1 codec, encoding only to WMV container format. Then select "Advanced Profile" and other audio/video settings you desire. It may take about 1 hour per four minutes of video, but when it is done the image actually looks better and of course the file size is smaller. After installation, you can find it selectable under the list of codecs within the WMV format with your encoding software.

Here is where to download the free VC-1 codec.

More information here and here.

...thanks guys! - unfortunately, after installation the VC-1 codec doesn't show with the other .wmv codec's in Adobe Premiere Elements 7 - so for me i guess it'll be a 2 step process - editing in Adobe to produce my original video file (either avi or wmv) and then processing it through Windows Media Encoder for further compression with the VC-1 codec - my files appear to come out a little smaller than Mark Ryder's for the same duration and, of course, not near as good quality...fortunately, i have a pretty new computer so the total processing time for both programs to produce a 2 min. 36 sec. video was 34 min. and 10 seconds...not too bad, i guess...

Gary, isn't there an advanced button or "more settings" button available after you select the WMV container format? That is where you can select the Advanced Profile, etc etc. It will not explicitly say "VC-1".

...yes...an "Advanced" button...there were 5 codec choices before i downloaded VC-1 and 5 choices after i downloaded VC-1 - it defaults to the "Windows Media Video 9" codec, 250 MB for a 4 min. 21 sec. video - pretty good quality but the .wmv file is too big; if you select the "Windows Media Video 9 Advanced Profile" the .wmv file is 10 MB for the same video and it is unacceptable quality...

...my best results so far have been obtained using the 2 step process mentioned above - render the .wmv file in Adobe with the Windows Media Video 9 codec and then process that file in the Windows Media Encoder (VC-1 codec) to compress it...you get a smaller file with better quality after processing with the VC-1...

PS: I'm thinking about reinstalling my Adobe Premiere Elements 7 to see if then it will recognize the VC-1 codec in the Adobe "Advanced" menu...i didn't have the VC-1 codec installed at the time of my original Adobe installation...
