After crashing my Avro, due to the set screws backing off on the beveled gear and loosing the tail, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with this bird. I wasn't going to make it a glow machine and I didn't like what I had done with the electric conversion. This is what I came up with that I like much better and takes a lot of the extra weight out that was there before. Since the packs will be forward of center, they will compensate for the extra weight of the motor being in the rear. Those packs are two 6S 5000 Performance Plus packs. Not sure if I will use the Actro 32-3 or a Scorpion 500 or 560 kV motor. I'll post more pics after I receive and get some more of the parts installed.

Here are a few more pics, if anyone is interested.

Will receive a new One Way from Blitz the end of the week and try and fly this weekend. I will try and get a vid and post it.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Didn't get my parts from Blitz today like I was suppose to, so will have to wait until next weekend.

hi mate, how is it flying with this mod?

Where did you get the bits from in order to convert this?

Sorry I haven't responded to any post, but I got so discusted with trying to make it work as an electric heli, I quit.

Nothing worked out trying to fit the motor in the back where I wanted it to be and with the motor where I had it originally up front, the packs had to be mounted on the sides and it looked like crap. So I bought some new frames and will put it back to a nitro heli. Since I don't own any nitro equipment and don't want to buy everything again, I'll try to sell it. As a matter of fact I might not even rebuild it and just take it apart and sell it as a kit.

What problems did you have with the motor at the rear?

There were a couple of problems, one was the gearing and the other had to do with the mounting of the motor and the bottom bearing support of the pinion shaft. Neal made me a pinion shaft longer than the nitro shaft, so it would extend down far enough for a bearing support. I was using the MA Ion X2 motor mounting and pinion shaft support pieces, that included the side frames. That was OK but as you can see in a couple of pics in my gallery, there wasn't enough distance between the pinion pulley and the motor pulley to get the right size pulleys for a good gear ratio. Plus getting everything lined up perpendicular to each other was close to impossible. The motor, pinion pulley and then the pinion to the main gear. Every Time I thought it was lined up and then try and fly it, there was something not just right and would cause another problem. After several months of this, I decided to give up and do something else.
And to be honest, the weight of this heli in electric form was way to heavy to get any kind of flight duration.

I was told a while back that Blitz was working on an electric version, can't remember if it was a 50 size or a 90. So that was another reason to quit and wait on one that was engineered to work. Since the main intent for this heli was for FAI, at least that's what I think and most of the guys competing at the worlds are going electric, it will probably be a 90 size heli.

How about using gears instead of the pulleys and belts. I think the belt was to smooth the pulses from the IC engine. Electric should be smooth without the belt.

Just flew a friend's Avro today. Rock solid hover in the 15-20 mph wind. Awesome machine.

The problem is the gearing, with an 80T main gear ideally you would need an 8T, 9T or depending on the motor and number of cells a 10T pinion. Or a larger main gear if it would fit in the frames and bolt up to the one way and crown gear.
I might ask if a larger main gear and and or a smaller pinion would be possible to get from Blitz. That would take some of the extra weight out of the machine and eliminate a lot of alignment problems. The motor would mount closer to the center of the heli to help with the CG.

R.J. You would have to come along and bring that up, now you got me thinking.

Actually, I was thinking you would still keep the two stage transmission. I was initially thinking you would replace the pulley on the motor and the pulley on the helical pinion with gears because they are too close together for enough belt engagement on the motor pulley.

But if you wanted to keep the belt, you could move the helical pinion drive to the front of the maingear so you could run a longer belt from the motor in the rear to the pinion in the front.

However, if you went to a one stage gearing, it would be a lot lighter, which is good for electrics. You could also go to a lower kv motor. I have an Actro 40-4 that is 320kv. What is the current gear ratio of the helical gears?

88T/19T = 4.63

If you used something like a 40-4 and 10S, then you would have somewhere around 2500 @ 100%.

I sent Neal an e-mail asking about a larger main and a smaller pinion. The frames would need to be trimmed in front of the main gear to allow for a main gear that needed 6mm more room. Trimming the CF frames hasn't ever been a problem for me, just look at the pics and you'll see what I mean.
But if you wanted to keep the belt, you could move the helical pinion drive to the front of the main gear so you could run a longer belt from the motor in the rear to the pinion in the front.
That's also a thought, damn would you quit making all these suggestions, now I know I'm going to be busy.

Uh-Oh, I should have kept my mouth shut. Maybe could have picked up a used Avro for a good price . But I think I'd rather see you get it working. An FAI eAvro would be very cool.

Regards,
Rick

Ya Rick, I was just kidding about that. Actually you got my mind going the right direction, so thanks. Neal said he would get me 100T main and pinion, he hasn't told me the cost yet and I'm sure it won't real cheap but I think he is as interested in seeing an eAvro as I am. He maid me a special pinion shaft that was longer than the stock one and it wasn't too expensive. I was also thing about looking at using a MA main, one-way and trying to adapt the Avro crown gear to that assembly. I doubt it would fit up but you never know.

Stan, I knew you were kidding, but I was serious about wanting an Avro after I flew my friend's. You've got to get your eAvro working. It's a fantastic flying machine.
