I have the gy401 with the s9254. I am loking to buy a spartan 760 but don't know if it is better in 3d flight.

I am a jong flyer I have been flying for almost a year now and is doing 3d. I have a problem with the 401 in backwards flight it doesn't want to hold the tail in front.

I want to know if it is the 401 or if a better gyro would hold better like the spartan?

question is about the spartan not about the solid-G but I don't think its the better gyro. Just the fact that you have to mount 2 separate units put me off right away. This is 2008 (almost 2009) and some manufacturer still insist in the 2 piece design. It adds weight and nothing else. Spartan all the way for me. 14gr the gyro itself and plus 16gr if you want to mount the metal plate. Go weight a 611 or Solid-G and come back.

About holding power... lets say I can fly backwards inverted at full speed with the tail off center (like 40 degrees) and the sucker holds and holds and holds. I couldn't do that on a Logictech (which is a very nice gyro too) and a 611 would start to make the machine wander off.

So the spartan is a better holding gyro then the futaba gyro's? The 401 just won't hold the inverted backwards flying it just holds it at low speed.

The Spartan is THE BEST gyro on the market. Without question.

Size, weight, performance, programmability, support, update features, the list goes on.....
Nothing else comes close.

Hell... I can fix that.
Uh oh..
Nope.
It's ***ked!!!

The 401 will hold fine in backwards flight if its set up correctly. It doesn't have the piro consistency of the high end gyros but it will hold.

BarracudaHockey is right in that the 401 will hold fine *as long as everything is setup correctly* However I find that in practice its almost impossible to get everything setup correctly especially on smaller electric helis since the headspeed fluctuates which means the tail rotor changes rpm and the gyro has one heck of a time holding properly.

As well as giving more consistent piro rates, the Spartan is very forgiving of headspeed flutuations so it will hold much better than most other gyros in day to day use. That's whay I swapped out all my 401/502/601 gyros for Spartans recently.

You will truely appreciate a spartan when you remove it from your heli. I went flybarless and although I love most things the vbar gives you, I miss the spartan every time I fly. Its rather depressing.

Well my 401 is setup right. This is a vid of me flying.

It just doesn't hold the tail at speed.

Well I can't watch the video here but with respect, if the tail doesn't "hold well" then its not set up properly.

A high end gyro will shine in piro consistency whether fighting or being pushed by the wind or torque but I can do hurricanes and rolling tail slides with a 401 as well as I can with my 611's

I sold my 2 x 401s and bought 2 x 760s. It was worth every cent and I wouldn't easily change to another gyro now. They work fine in everything from a 450 size electric to a 90 and beyond on both ends. I would recommend buying the PC cable as they are a total pleasure and very easy to set up on the PC. You can also save each generation of settings in case you want to see what you did last time etc.

I agree that Spartans are way better than 401's! I've managed to set up my 450 with 401+s9257 combo in it so that it holds perfectly in fast backwards flight and loops, tail in dives, and in some of the piro manouvers like piroflips and pirotictocs. But it still ain't a blast to fly because it's so important to use cyclic and pitch correctly, the 401 is very easy to make let go. And I'm pretty convinced that I've set it up as well as it is possible. The heli is capable to do all the 3D stuff out there but the gyro ruins the best of it so I'll probably sell it to some beginner (as soon as shops in the UK get Spartans in stock, I wonder when that'll happen). I'd love to do some piro funnels.

So yes, you can do 3D with the 401 but the Spartan will make it a lot easier.

Here's a couple of videos of it

The best tail servo IMHO is the BLS251. I would probably put the Spartan on your TRex 450 since I find the small helis are very twitchy and you'll thank the Spartan for holding the tail solid, couple it with something like the 9257 in that case. The GY401 will have an easier time on the EVO with the 9254.

Just my $0.02 worth.
