Troll or not, I can see tatical applications for an air frame this size but agree that the specs would need to be much more robust than tyical public RC fair.

I agree, something just don't line up with this! Been around long enough and worked for the DOJ and this sure don't seem like them, they usually will go straight to the manufacturers for quotes and training. When they use civilian employees they sure need an education, a 2 year degree person would know how to spell!

I wish. I've witnessed quite a change over the years in my profession as an engineer. I have run into more than my share of new grads having a four-year engineering or computer science degree who couldn't spell if their life depended on it. It's not just related to the technical terms, but many of today's grads know nothing about spelling, sentence composition, paragraph structure, or common usage of words. What we let taxpayer funded public education get away with these days is absolutely mind-boggling.

It would be a mistake to think people with low spelling skills (me) don't have something to teach/offer you. I have learned a great deal from people that are not the smartest in the group. Its hard but usefull to seek out knowledge. Hard not to judge a book by its cover but a real good idea not to.

All I can say is Wow.

I just sent Troy an apology, for you that think small, and feel the need to bring someone down to your level.

I have not posted on RR in quite some time due to being restricted. I see I haven't missed much.

Troy IS with the FBI, and they ARE looking for a low cost system to do things that full scale cannot.

He may be innocent in the ways of R/C, that does not make him stupid. I have directed him to a place for getting answers to his questions, it may be that he is comparing my responses to his queries with those of other opinions, again, that does not make him stupid.

For those that think it can't be done, and so that this isn't seen as an advertisement on my part, go see some of the work that my buddy John at Airfoil has done with Law enforcement. He and I may not see eye to eye on things, but that in no way changes the good work he has done with Police. What Troy asks for CAN be done.

Ok Chris, now I know why people don’t like to deal with you. Someone pops up here on RunRyder and asks for items well beyond his obvious capabilities, we question his intent and you jump on a box and rant.

Yes, anyone who states he works for the federal government and has no knowledge of this type of stuff and is willing to launch a 20+ pound UAV will get us all looking like fools.

Easy guys.
Thanks for showing us the light who Troy really is Chris, nice to know he is who he says he is.

And Chris, you gotta admit, with all the trolling going on here from crooked vendors, banned members and such, it did seem a little strange a first post claiming to be a goverment offical asking about getting a uav.

Troy,
Sorry to mis-judge your intentions, I am sure in your line of work you are aware of those who mascarade as people they are not. Now that we know who you are, welcome to RR. And the bergen machines are hands down much beter the the air stars, if you do reaserch on air star you will see a torrid history of dishonesty and taking peoples money without producing product. If you need some actual names of those who have been ripped off by AS, just pm me.

The guys here for the most part are a pretty good bunch, they will try to answer any questions honestly that you may wish to ask in the future.

Which is worse, ignorance or apathy? I don't know and I don't care!

Not trying to be small minded, not trying to rain on anyone's parade. I don't think anything in my original post was incorrect, wrong, or not the honest truth.

The idea of a cheap, light, maneuverable platform for aerial surveillance is enticing, especially to local law enforcement, and to some people in the Justice Department.

But you have to admit, when someone who appears to have no real grasp of what it takes to operate an RC heli (whether it's a Gaui 200, a Min Air Stratus, a Synergy N9, or a host of other machines currently available) posts on a hobby-related forum, that he's looking to develop a FLEET of low cost aerial video platforms for the DOJ and has a maximum target price in mind...

...what should we think?

It is an intriguing idea, but one that requires some real research, a REAL plan, a REAL budget, and a REALISTIC idea of how practical an RC heli based platform would be. This guy is prepared to spend MY (and YOUR) tax dollars on what will be a total waste of time, effort, and money, if it is not properly scoped, researched, and planned.

As someone who has been a modeler for nearly 40 years, an RC heli pilot for at least 30 of those years, and one who has been intimately involved in designing and producing avionics systems for over 30 years, I would LOVE to be involved in a project such as this. I would also want to make sure that a firm foundation is being laid to insure that the proper steps to make the program successful and SAFE before going whole hog and buying a "fleet" of RC helis. I would jump at the chance to be an advisor and participant in a program such as this.

I'm not here to sell a product, not here to put anyone down, not here to hawk the company I work for. I AM here to bring a bit of common sense and perspective to the table.

Yes, some law enforcement types MAY be having some success with a similar program, but ONE TIME is all it takes for that successful program to dump a Bergen Industrial twin gasser down in a crowd accidentally, you can pretty much figure where THAT program and RC heli operation in general will go....

On a personal note, perhaps Troy might be willing to talk to his DOJ friends and see if they are willing to hire me on. After all, in this day and age with the economy the way it is heading, a job in the DOJ might be a bit more stable than one in the private sector designing avionics...uh oh, there I go, promoting myself...

I'll offer up some of my experience here and invaluable insight . I have done some Aerial photography work as a pilot. As already stated in this conversation this is a skill that takes significant time and effort to obtain. There are a number of good platforms for doing this some which have been mentioned here BUT I think the platform is secondary to the questions about setting up a program to get *qualified* R/C pilots and mechanics to operate a program effectively. With that in mind I'd suggest starting off with a more practical training program based on a more manageable platform AND hire in experienced R/C heli pilots to at least consult on the program.

Also, I think it's legitimate to at least ask the question about intent though I would imagine anyone who is looking to do bad using an R/C vehicle as a platform would be a lurker.

One more item that troyb and others should look at are some of the autonomous navigation systems that are under development. I know there are GPS based systems that can execute a complete flight plan from startup to shutdown without any user input. They can also operate in "assisted" mode where the user input will 'guide' the heli around but only allow a maximum if say 8'/sec horizontal and say 4'/sec vertical and will do a fully automated landing. These systems are not cheap but if I were in this business that's what I'd be looking for. I don't have any names - again if it were my business I'd would find the information.

and for my experience: I'd rather have two $5k lift platforms than one $15k platform.

Slander? Useless? Some of the posts were a bit cautionary, as some questioned the legitimacy of the original post, but once having got beyond THAT, there were some very good ideas tossed out, some good advice tossed out, and even the offer of help.

I certainly hope and pray that the DOJ is actually willing to solicit the ideas of people with experience in this field before pursuing this idea.

Have a merry Christmas anyway, and be careful with our tax dollars, especially since many of them are being shuffled off to banks, auto dealers, and financial institutions. There aren't a lot left to go around where they are REALLY needed, and I don't look forward to a huge tax increase to pay for new things.

Air Star

Been dealing with Air Star for a year or so. Nothing best the best service and support. Not sure what the others experienced but it's hard to imagine anything but positive.

BTW: The heli's are the best i've seen in their class.

I did what you said CJames and from what I can see here... you are the main basher against Air Star! It's quite obvious that you are friends with Chris Bergen so the picture is clear. Every company has had bumps in the road to success and whatever Air Star had in the past is no longer true today. You sure have a lot of negativity towards something you have no experience with. Anyone can post incorrect statements and it's up to reader to shuffle through the BS.

The fact that you use this site to sell kittens shows the lack of respect to the members of this site. As far as I'm concerned... your creditability is shot!

Exactly who are you?

Attacking someone's credibility when you yourself have
  • NO post history
  • NO profile information
  • NO location set in his profile
  • NOTHING!
Who is this hiding behind a keyboard?

Just odd that someone registers on a site 4 years, never posts, then 1 day decides to climb out of his hole and resurrect an old thread, only to defend a product which, as far as I can tell, no one was bashing in the 1st place

Just to stir up some ****. Yeah, thats it.

Go back in hole.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I have been accused of a LOT of things but selling kittens?? where in the world did that accusation come from?? You have me mixed up with someone else you moron!

And btw, Everything about air star sucks, they have a history of cheating people, it doesn't take much to do a search and see that for yourself!

To quote a friend of mine, "I wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire."

Anytime you want to compare creditability just look at my classified feedback, come see me when you or air star have something to compare about honesty and integrity.

Selling kittens, Oh the humanity
