Hi guys. I'm astonished at the number of simulators out there after a little bit of google searching. I also realize that there probably isn't any consensus on what the best sim would be. I was wondering whether there's a reputable site that collects industry/user reviews in some way that allows a newbie to have a reasonable shot at finding the most critically acclaimed sims. Everybody's marketing stuff says "the best RC sim ..." etc. etc.

I'm familiar with traditional flight sims and it's pretty easy to find the big boys that dominate that market. Howevere, I'm interested in getting a copter sim that works with a physical controller to learn with that has as realistic an experience as possible.

If there is a review site or a thread here, please advise. Also, don't hesitate to chime in with your own opinions if you've gone down this road and feel you picked a winner yourself.

THANKS

Yeah, absolutely everybody here (with maybe a couple exceptions) is going to tell you to get either RealFlight G4 or Phoenix.

Here are the differences:

Phoenix:

1 Cheaper than realflight
2 You need your own real radio to hook up to your computer to use it
3 Autorotations are more realistic
4 Requires less processing power from your computer, so it should run a little smoother.
5 Not sure how multiplayer is on this one.
6 Updates and new helis, new fields, etc are FREE.
7 Helis and fields only available from the software vendor. Users can't create their own.

Realflight:

1 Comes with a radio dedicated to simming so you don't have to waste battery power for your own radio.
2 Interface is a little more refined
3 Has instructional videos of some of the pros to show you how to do some maneuvers
4 Multiplayer is friggin horrible. Constant disconnections and lag.
5 Has user developed helis and fields available for download from the internet.

Personally I have G4. I'm overall pretty happy with it, but I'd like to try pheonix at some point. Physics in both are pretty damn close to real life. If I were to do it all over again? I think I'd probably go Phoenix.

Very informative post RotorMonkey. Thanks for that insight and especially for sharing from your own experience.

I'm downloading a video from Phoenix. I'll definitely go check out RealFlight too. I'm very much interested in getting as much info as I can.

I did find another thread devoted to this and I apologize for retreading this tire. (http://www.runryder.com/helicopter/t476822p1/)

I was aware of REFLEX from a few years ago and assumed it was at the top. Glad to learn about Phoenix and RealFlight. Sounds like Phoenix is the consensus fave here.

not sure iif thay still make it but dont get a reflex xtr.

i am appy with my realflight 3.5 it work great but i dont play it as if i were playing a video game so multi player is not needed.other than that i have not tried the pheonix. but the real flight is worth the money.

Not entirely true, PhoenixRC has their PhoenixCreator which is a fully-featured model painting package which features a powerful array of tools, allowing you to create your own flying sites or modify the paint-scheme of any model in Phoenix in full 3D - as you would a model in real life.

if you looking for one of the best sims then
i would highly recomend that the phoenix sim is the best
because it has so many updates and the models fly so realisticly
of course you will never beat the real thing but theres nothing beter than pratising on a sim all of your your flying and 3d

Phoenix seems to have better heli physics as well. the helis in RF dont feel like my real helis.

Phoenix rocks love it.
and Ive owned RF 3 and 4 and tried 4.5 just doesnt feel right for helis.. but great for planes.
