Hi John,

Thanks for the info. What I am really wanting to do is to mount the electric motor to the tail box and preferable have a 5 mm shaft coming out of the motor that extends through the bearings in the "custom made tail box" or possibly even eliminate the bearings in the tail box all together. I would then have just a bracket on the back of the tail boom to hold the motor and to mount the tail rotor pitch slider. We are doing aerial video with a front mount with heavy cameras, so having the motor on the tail box is actually a good thing.

My question then would be; whats the chance of getting a custom built Kora 25-14 with 5 mm shaft extended out the side? I have not been able to find a link to Kora motors. Does anyone have a link to them?

Thanks for the help

Wayne,
mounting the Kora on the tail as you describe is a good way to balance the heli and gain performance.
the shaft is held in with 2 set screws and is easily replaced with a longer shaft.
I spent a bunch of time looking for them and found icare in Canada to import them for me.
they also have links now to all of the line.

Thanks John, I will check them out. I am, would be a little concerned if the motor has a 5 mm bored hole as opposed to a motor shaft that is one piece. If the fit of the slide through 5 mm shaft is not near perfect you will have run out at the end where the tail rotor hub will be mounted, unless I can figure out a way of dialing in the shaft. That is my main concern.

John,

Are you happy with the X-era motors?? The new Pyro from Kontronik is getting some pretty good reviews; curious about the results.

Wayne,
I do not think that dialing in is a problem, they are one piece long shaft like most out runners. I have one I can loan you for a while if you want to look it over before putting out cash. They are nice motor, though heavy for our use in this size. They have a bearing that runs inside the bottom of the bell too, kind of cool, I’m just not sure if it does anything..

PT,
the pyro is a really good motor and worth looking into. we needed a custom motor and they (kontronik)are not readily available for help.
the pyro is 510 kvr I believe and the motor David built for us is a 300 kvr

Hi John,

Thanks for the offer. I might take you up on that, but let me see if this is really the way I want to go first.

For this to work I would need 47 mm of 5 mm shaft sticking out the side of the motor for a standard pitch slider tail rotor hub arrangement. How long is the shaft or is that something that they will make to order? Is the motor you are talking about the red one in this thread? If not a picture would be a big help.

Thanks again

Hi Wayne,
the motor is the red one. anything i can do for your your cause is good for me.
i remember the stock shafts were 30 mm long. We cut ours for this project. Finding and installing the shafts is easy, it is common material and not needed from the manufacture.

Thanks John,

I have a bunch of six inch long 5 mm 303 stainless that I use for tail rotor shafts. I could not find anything about the Kora motors on icare's site. What is the rought cost of this motor? I bought my Pletty motor and ESC from icare. I will give them a call tomorrow.

John

What is the exact setup that allow you for 20 minutes of flight time at 23 to 28 lbs?

I am looking at the X-Era 4035/3y and 4y for 2 different AP heli around 25lb.

Are your setup running main rotor and tail separate to get this kind of efficiency? What mah battery are you running?

Jason,
the 300 kvr 40-35 is a great motor, and efficient. the best power use is between 1100 and 1350 watts, which puts it in the ap use. Because of the hundreds of commercial hours they will see, we elected to use ceramic hybrid bearings. With our gearing at 8.2 we felt the rpm balance is a perfect fit. David has talked about getting us bigger bearings for the motor drive end, I would like this but do not really see any problems.
The long flight times on our Joker aircraft, are the accumulation of large batteries, good ESC., good blades, 10.000 mah 12S, fly bar-less set up, quality bearings, and care full assembly, and not least is the good design from Gerd, his heli design is hard to beat.
Several of our jokers are running on the 4 hundred hour mark for documented flight time, with no down time or accidents, Photo flights every day. We stabilize the heli’s to keep any jerky movements out of the system. One large movement or turn can take 20 seconds off an AP machine.
We wanted more flight time, bigger lifts and a better ability to auto along with better high altitude. The aggressor we are setting up, is for direct implementation of the Wepilot, for Simi autonomous flight. Adding the tail motor allows us to raise the horse power with out reinventing the drive train.

Sounds great. I just got myself a Joker Maxi 2 and looking for the best power setup for it. If I get the 4035 4y and is Power jazz, a good match for this motor?

How many hours have these motor been tested with out failure? And what type of weight is it lifting?

Where can I get a tail motor setup and how much will this cost?

Not too much flight time on the motors since they are brand new. But this is a pretty good test

All I can say is WOW,

This is the best flight I have seen for the Joker 3dd.

I assume it has an Xera Motor in it?
