I've got the 611 on the front gyro mount and it just touches the canopy but I haven't had any tail problems because of it. If your 401 is causing it to bow out that's not good, can you move it back on the mount a little bit to free up some room? Also, what type of pad are you mounting it on?

mine did that with jrg500t gyro as well. I moved the mount back 2mm toward the start shaft and also moved the rear canopy posts up and forward about a 1cm. Moving the rear posts holds the canopy a little higher so it clears the gyro and it also had a side benefit of making it easier to put on/take off the canopy.
To find the correct location of the rear mounts:
1) put the canopy on with just the front clip.
2) I put two extra pieces of Velcro on top of my gyro to act as spacer betwen the canopy.
3) I then used a 16th drill bit through the canopy grommets to mark the location of the new rear mounts.
4) put the rear mounts in there new hole and use an extra frame spacer if your kit came with one between the two mounts. Mine did..
5) get rid of the Velcro spacer between the gyro and canopy

I also think this stiffens up the frames quite a bit back there too

Yeah had the same problem.
Have moved my JR G770 Gyro back on the mount so it slighty overhangs the mount and the standard red canopy just fits without touching.
Tried one of the later coloured canopies and it just would not fit with out contact no matter how far the gyro was moved back.
Carried on using the kit canopy in the end although I could have removed the mount and put the gyro directly on top of the servos.
