right now i am deciding about which camera to get...

It will be hanging under a Logo 500 in a selfbuilt Rig...

Now, which one should i take? seems they both are in the same price region, and that what makes me think.

the 640 has got 10MP, the 650 has got 12MP, will I really notice the difference? (just planing on shooting houses and perhaps firms, no giant nature pix)

I am planning on using the CDHK-Hack on the cam, especially then intervalometer-function, does that work for both cams?

The 650 is about 60gr. heavier, will that make a difference?

Anything else i should take into account?

Would love to hear your opinions

Daniel

One thing to consider will be the wide angle and telephoto capabilities which will depend on what you are shooting. I have to replace my current camera because it does not have a wide enough field of view at the wide angle setting. It is the equivalent of about 38mm and I have found I really need somewhere around 28mm effective. If you are planning on shooting houses it will depend on how far back you can get but I don't seem to be able to get back far enough for this one to work. Just something to keep in mind.

The A640 is an excellent camera. Because it it obsolete you should be able to get is at a good price. For general AP work, 10 Mpix is all you will need (I usually run on about 5 anyway). Don't forget to get the wide angle adapter - it's a must have addition to the camera.

A640 all the way. I have 2 A640's and I had an A650 for a short while. I preferred the photos from the A640 and it was lighter than the A640 when both had the wide angle adapters installed.

Ok, sounds like my first idea was the best, when i thougt: "go with the 640!"

Now just waiting for someone having a A640 up for sale... (ebay is real bad in that direction, cause nobody is willing to ship to anywhere except the US )

Could you tell me which wide angle you bought?

Greetings daniel

The only wide angle you should buy for that camera is the Canon WCDC58N. I tried some of those cheaper Chinese knock-off and they weren't good at all. The canon lens is large and a bit heavy but it's great quality and lets in plenty of light. Don't forget to get the adpater tube for the A640 also. That yu0 can get on ebay for a few bucks... doesn't necessarily need to be the Canon adapter.

If you get an A640 and need to modify it for an RC Flysoft electronic shutter trigger switch you can send it (and the switch) to me and I'll do it for no cost.... just cover cost of shipping it back to you.

theslayer, the mod so you can use the RCflysoft switch works well, but be aware that it negates the Canon warranty, as I discovered when mine needed a new mainboard for the second time (they fixed it under warranty the first time but rejected it on the second).

You might also like to investigate the CHDK option, wherebt you can control most of the camera functions via the USB port. This ha the advantage of leaving the camera warranty alone.

Yeah i will be using the CDHK mod first. seems like a great bit of software if it really works like they say on the website. Specially the shutter speed and the intervalometer is really interesting, if i just put in a script to make a photo every 4 seconds, then all i have to do is concentrate on flying and it will hopefully get 3-5 good shots per flight.

Thanks for the tip with the wide angle, i think i will first buy the A640 and see how it works, if it then isn't enough i will upgrade to the wide angle for sure...

Is it possible to make good panos with the A640 + WCDC58N? If my calculations are correct it converts 35x0,7=24,5mm.

Or should I go with a 450D and a wide lens?

I already have a Panasonic DMC-LX2 with 28mm & 10,2 Mp wich I am very pleased with. It also takes RAW. Weight is cca 250 gram.

What is the weight of the WCDC58N and LA-DC58F?

Weight is 9.9 oz.

Panos can be very effectively done with this combination. Of course, the narrower the field of view, the more images are needed to create a 360 pano, and the more chance of errors.

Using a good quality wider lens will reduce these risks. But adding the weaight of a DSLR brings its own issues.

I have a 570IS with CHDK, powerful!!!

I use the USB shutter trigger and the intervalometer by script (it take n photo with a delay of x seconds)

I choose this camera for the low price and for the presence of image stabilizer (that doesent work well with heli vibration because it's developed for human vibration)
