I have a DX7 radio, GY401 gyro with a DS3400G digital servo on the tail. My problem is that my tail will start hunting back and forth while on the ground and in a hover. It will hunt in hh mode and normal mode. I have tried switching the gyro to non-digital mode and still no help. I have played with the delay also and still, hunting. Is there a way to adjust the gain or is there something I should do with the radio? Thanks.

Your gain is too high.

the gain channel is either controlled with the end points on the GEAR channel or Aux 2 (whichever your gyro is plugged into)

Or it can be controlled with the gyro menu in the radio.

Where is your gyro plugged into, and what values do you have for gyro?

I have my gyro on the gear channel but I have read to leave the gear channel on gear instead of gyro in radio setup menu in order to switch between hh and normal with the gear switch. Should I activate gyro under the gear in the setup menu and if so what should I set the gyro sens to and how would I switch between hh and normal. Thanks for your help.

>>>"Should I activate gyro under the gear in the setup menu?"

You could, but you don't have to.

The SIMPLEST explanation involves using endpoints in the TRAVEL ADJUST menu.

I'd suggest starting out at about 35% gyro gain.

to get 35% gain in heading hold mode, set the "+" side of the travel adjust for the gear channel to +35

for Normal, or 'rate' mode, make that value on the other side -35.

to switch between modes, just flip the gear switch.

This is a my JR 9303, but the idea is the same thing

Awusome. I'll try that as soon as I wake up tomorrow. I have not been able to find anyone explaining this problem. Thanks so much for your help. I'll post again tomorrow with the result for anyone else that might be having this problem.

Since your DS3400 is a digital servo, you can flip the switch back to digital.

You shouldn't need any delay on the gyro, you can set that back to zero, if you havent already done so.

Hey,

Just a quick add-on to what Dood has told you, I have found that with using JR style radios with Futaba GY401's that the gain channel can sometimes work a little differently. I think this is the case with the DX7 as well as I have explained this method to others.

Basically what this means is that the 100% travel range on either side of the Gear switch is broken into half to control the gain, eg :

0 ~ 50 % on Tx. = 0 ~ 100% heading hold gain on gyro
51 ~ 100 % on Tx. = 0 ~ 100% rate mode gain on gyro.

This is easily identified by observing the red LED on the gyro as you go past the 50% point in ATV value on the Tx. If there is this switching point as you go past it the LED will go off or come on again.

SUCCESS!! In the radio setup menu I put gear for the gear channel, aux for the aux channel. The gyro is switched to digital mode with 0 delay. In the TRAVEL ADJUST menu I have gear set to +35, -35. I am able to switch between HH mode and normal with the gear switch. I finally have the bird trimmed out and it is as stable as a big gasser. Thanks guys for your help.

glad u got it fixed...Im also wanting to improve my Tail setup as well. I have a trex 450 with a GY401 Gyro and a HS81 analog Tail servo and it's always hunting to....I am thinking of gettn the ds3400g over a 9650..Is that a good idea? Is the DS3400G just as good as a 9650 or 9257? i have a Futaba 6EXHP Transmitter...

The ds3400 has works great on my mars 480. Rock solid tail during tail slides, backwords flight loops and rolls. fantastic gyro/servo combo I think. I am going to try the 9650 on my beam just to see if there is a difference.
