Your not alone, Everyone seems to ride the same wagon. RC Helis are dangerous, but so are so many other things in everyday life. Some of you act like that only helis are this dangerous. Flying helis is less dangerous than so many other hobbies. (This going to ruin it for all of us) is just stupid talk. Again I'm not saying this video showed anything but stupidity on his part but responses like these just show the pure ignorance of people thinking we fly something more dangerous than riding a motorcycle without a helmet.

Thats a horrible analogy. Riding a motorcycle without a helmet with hurt the rider alone, no one else.

How about lets correlate riding a motorcycle doing a wheeling at speed down a new york sidewalk filled with people, is that a good place to do that?

NO its not a good idea, Lets be safe in everything we do, But on the same token lets not go crazy and talk like helis are the most dangerous things out there. I don't think anybody said here that that was a safe way to fly a heli by any stretch. Its not what he did but the reaction he generated. We all seem to get carried away as if RC helis are a time bomb waiting to go off. You people are scaring people out of the hobby with this stuff. This is a fun hobby and everyone should have the chance to enjoy. Stop scaring people away. Based on some of the replies here as a new person I would feel safer holding a lit stick of dynamite. I would let my 6 year old fly a heli before I would let him use a skill saw! Stop scaring future heli hobbyist away!

If defending that rc helis should be flown in safer enviornements than in the video scares future hobbyist away, then maybe its a good thing they don't become heli hobbyist anyways. Me and many others aren't commanding fear, but simply respect for the heli and others.

Heres an example, The DMV shows that car crash video "Red Asphalt" to new drivers, do they never drive and give up? No, if they have the desire to learn and understand the risk, they are able to drive with a better understanding and be much safer than just thinking cars are toys.

Whoever here thinks these things aren't dangerous in anyway and doesn't respect them, let me know via PM so I can make sure not to be around when you fly. Thanks for the heads up!

It's absolutely ludicrous to say that we shouldn't point out dangerous practices because it might scare people away. That is complete rubbish. The only way we might scare people away is if we just made an unqualified statement such as "RC helis are dangerous! They can maim and even kill people!" What you see in this thread is quite the opposite. It points out ways that helis can be dangerous when used improperly. The only people that's going to scare away are people that aren't willing to learn how to use a heli properly, and I very much want those people scared away.

And to say that there are more dangerous things out there is completely irrelevant. Of course there are more dangerous things out there, such as skydiving, cigarette lighters, boiling water on the stove, guns, terrorists, nuclear bombs, etc. That doesn't make the act of flying a heli in a park full of kids any less dangerous or stupid, and it doesn't lessen the need to point out how stupid and dangerous that practice is.

I agree with both sides, 1 that guy was a noob and could have probably found 100 better places to fly than a playground. but people flipping out over it will cause mass hysteria with the public
and cause action to be taken by a higher power ending with some sort
of ban on flying.
People don't want bad publicity related to helis, so lets stop crying out loud and simply state this guy had a bad idea

I don't understand the 'This going to ruin it for all of us' concern. The only place a ban that can be imposed, is on publicly used property. There seems to be an agreement that pilots should be flying at designated clubs and flying areas already, so what's the difference? A ban would bring a halt to dangerous conditions like in the video, after all, the safety of others seems to be the highest concern in this thread.

The bottom line is having fun.

I think the main thrust of the so called 'safety nazis' is safety of others. Call me crazy, but I don't think its a bad thing to stand for.

Governments, by and large, have NOT seen fit to regulate things like that. They don't have OCD. They have wider concerns to focus on.

So rant and rave, the only ones you're humoring are yourselves.

Something like the gun rights objectors, the Supreme Court has recently told what you can do with your ideas.

I will always have a problem with those who decide they know what's best for others.

I don't agree with what the guy did... Not very safe.

Are there other potentially unsafe activities(driving a car, going to the doctor)? Sure. Gotta decided if the benefit outweighs the risk.

As for Airwolf, this isn't the first time he's taken this tone in a safety related thread. His song and dance is the same every time, and the sole purpose is to rile people up, then speak to them in a condescending manner because they're "not as smart" as he and his astounding intelligence.

I haven't said or even implied that others are not as smart as me. That's not an issue. . . . unless you feel threatened by a perceived implication . . . . but then that's a personal problem.

What is an issue is when the loud visceral ones are unable to support their argument with anything but emotions, hot air and name calling and refuse to let others have their own opinion. Then, and only then, I give back what I get.

You know, I have to agree with you. 100%!
I think there is a handful of people on this board, that come on here and argue with people simply for the sake of arguing.

To use AirworfRC as a prime example, it's certainly not everyday that he comes on here to agree with somebody. Very far from it.

My first thought after reading Airwolf RC's initial comments in this thread, is that it was HIM in the video flying, and he was defending his own lack of common sense and good judgement.

I realize it isn't.

Airwolf RC's profile location says, "42½ N, 83½ W"
That puts him approximately 50 miles to the northwest of Detroit, MI.

This video was not filmed in Detroit, as there are palm trees scattered throughout.
Palm Trees do not grow in Detroit, Michigan.
Palm trees in the US, grow along the gulf coast, the coastal southwest, and coastal southeast along the Atlantic seaboard.

I can tell this isn't American southwest, as I would see hills and possibly mountains. The terrain in the video is flat.

I am also ruling out the possibility of this being from along the gulf coast. It appears to be set in the Winter months. It appears to be a bit colder as many of the people in the background I can see wearing jackets.
In addition to that, there are also several dormant deciduous trees.
The trees along the gulf coast are primarily conifers, same with the Southeastern US, including Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.
It very very rarely gets cold enough in that part of the country to ever necessitate in a winter jacket.

Im saying this video was shot near the coast in either northern North Carolina, or Virginia.

coastal North Carolina and Virginia:
a) Flat
b) cold in winter
c) palm trees (likely the Dwarf Palmetto, as the Dwarf Palmetto is one of the most frost tolerant palms)
d) plenty of deciduous trees.

(In addition, I personally know people in North Caroina AND Virginia with Hirobo helicopters )

Anyways, I have to let Airwolf off the hook on this one. Although it would APPEAR that it is him flying in the video, it is not, since palm trees cannot grow in Detroit.

I did ask AirwolfRC a question in good faith. It was not judgmental or accusitory, though he said it was both. Just reread this thread, all of it, and do not see where he got that opinion. My question still stands.
AirWolfRC, if you were to witness that flight, you were in the park for a walk and saw the entire flight, what would you do?

Percieved it's not.

All one has to do is read some of your statements in this thread alone(never mind the rest of the site) to observe your condescending attitude.
