Gang,

I'm getting a Predator together and in the process have ran across 2 styles of spindles; one with grooves for snap-rings (HW6180B) and one without the grooves (HW6180A). None of the manuals I have show the snap-rings; just the big shim and 3 smaller shims. I've installed one without snap-ring grooves (HW6180A), however curiosity has gotten the best of me. Does anyone have a parts break-down, etc, that show the snap-rings being used or know what variation of which model may use them?

Thanks,

Chuck (in Aaaala Baaama)

Hey,

The "Clipped Axle" as it was called was designed to stop the blade grip bearings being pre-loaded by the head dampers as you tightened all the feathering spindle assembly together.
This allowed the grips to rotate freely without any flying loads on them and is a technique used by MA for instance.

However there was a batch of these clipped axles which were made with the grooves being cut too deep, this left the spindle weak and from memory I think there was one failure.

I would suggest throwing the clipped (grooved) spindle away and using the stock solid feathering spindle.
Century did remove this clipped axle from their spare parts listing I think.

re: "Clipped Axle"

Thanks a lot for the reply. The spacing looked exactly the part, however I wasn't sure if this was an "update" or an "outdate." Little bit of both it seems.

All seems well as is assembled (without snap-rings), so I'll call it good.

Thanks again,
