I have a spare programmable TV remote (Logitech Harmony)which has a rechargable battery.

This has sat in the drawer un-needed for over a year but now my original remote is beginning to fail.

So I got the spare out and attempted to charge it - can't get anything into the battery.

It's a LIon 3.7V 950mAh.

Before I accept that the battery is dead, I would like to try and charge the battery externally using my RC charger.

So here's my question - can you charge a LIon with a LiPo charger.

I would set it on 250mAh (or 500mAh), 1 cell. I appreciate that this is 3.3V rather than 2.7V but other than that is a LiPo charger appropriate.

I would of coarse charge outside with the battery stood on a concrete slab in case of combustion.

Cheers,

Nigel

Even better than that, use alligator clips from a cell phone charger. This gives you the appropriate voltage and charge regiment. Other than that, you can find a buddy that has a charger capable of doing 1S A123 and keep the charger amperage way down, 950ma or lower, this would also be the correct charge regiment.

If my Triton charger is telling me the truth, Li-Ion and Li-poly charge the same (only one setting for either)

Aren't Li-Ion also 3.7V nominal?

Never, ever, ever, ever give up.

It depends on the chemisty.
Lipoly is 4.2V max charge
A123 Li-Ion is 3.7V max charge
Emoli Li-ion is 4.2V max charge
I'm pretty sure Li-Ion prismatic cells (which is probably what is in your remote) is 3.7V max charge. but i could be wrong. If i were you i'd punch the part# on your battery into google and you could probably find out pretty quick.
I'm thinking its probably dead though...

If the voltage is to low no charger will charge it anyway. Whip out your mutlimeter first then get back to us.

Yes, I graduated this last December. I'm trying to go back for my masters then PhD but having trouble getting funding. Right now I'm employed doing some R+D for a high altitude wind generator or FEG as some people call it.

Good plan. I went back for my Masters in Engineering and never regretted it. I've been toying with the doctorate idea, but upon researching it a bit, i hear its not extremely useful unless you want to get into research or academia.

Big thanks to mmc205.

My LiPo charger wouldn't start. I presume the automatic electronics couldn't detect a cell so wouldn't start the charge cycle.

But wacking the battery in the freezer for a few hours and then connecting it up to my Nokia charger seems to have brought it back from the dead.

Cheers,

Nigel
