Need Help with Carb Smart.

Just got done with “braking in” Os.50 Hyper Engine. As I had put 3 Tanks through this engine ( 1.5 L ). I wanted to know which settings am I supposed to keep with carbsmart to get best performance and keeping the engine running good.
As of now here’s what I have on my carb smart :

Max Rich – 1 ¾ Turns
Max Lean – maybe 2 more clicks then 1 ¼
Center/Failsafe – 1 ½

This is what I have. Will this keep my engine in best running condition? Will appreciate if you’ll be able to assist me as well as let me know about your Max Rich/ Max Lean in terms of turns.

Thanks,

JJ

I tried this exact setup when I got my 1st Carbsmart. The crappy sensor ended up failing and resulted in a nice whole in the piston and a complete engine rebuild.

I really don't trust the sensor that much so here is how i have 3 of mine set up with great results.

I fly and tune the engine for maximum consistent power during idle up. Then I set the Carbsmart's full lean position to that setting. I set up the rich setting to allow approximately 1/8 to 3/16 travel in the rich direction, this allows it to richen up slightly when pushing the heli through hard through maneuvers. With a failsafe point in the middle. I am also using the 110 degree setting.

I have seen other people using it to "set their mixture" I just use mine to prevent over-heating. I get great power and since i have been using them, never had an overheating problem. So far around 40 flights with this setup and absolutely no problems.

I am sure other will chime in with other setups.

Every engine is going to tune different according to your location. Temperature, humidity, elevation, etc. all play a roll in how your engine will perform.

A good starting point is to tune for maximum power by using the backplate method. First you get the engine up to temp by flying around for a couple of minutes doing your normal stuff. The come in and land and spool down quickly. Stop the blades as soon as you can and then touch the backplate with your fingertip. You should be able to hold your finger there for about 5 seconds or so. If you can keep your finger there longer, you are too rich. If you can't keep your finger there that long, then you are too lean. Adjust the high speed needle in small increments (1-2 clicks at a time). Once I find the sweetspot where I can keep my finger there for 3-5 seconds, I richen 1 click to give me a little protection.

Once you get the high speed needle set, adjust the Carbsmart to give you about 1/8 turn adjustment in each direction. I started with about 50% gain at 100 C. At this setting, my engine seemed to be down a bit on power. I changed the temp range on the Carbsmart to 110 C. This temp setting proved to be just about perfect. 110 C (230 F) may seem high, but remember that the sensor is located on the head. The head is also a heat sink and is therefor hotter then the rest of the engine. After a hard flight, I usually measure about 200-210 F just below the head.

I have not had any issues running my Carbsmart using the method above. I will say that I did not notice a huge increase in power or fuel efficiency like others have. I believe it is because my engine was already tuned for max power, while still maintaining a good temp with plenty of smoke coming out of the muffler

Hope this helps and good luck.
