Hi Guys,

I am rebuilding my crashed 32VR (the one with the JetRanher fus that threw a tail blade a while back) and while disassembling the mast and the components fitted to it, I noticed the stock plastic pitch rod guide was split. A combination of aged plastic and overtightening by whoever built it means it's effectively a throw away piece.

Now, I have a replacement part (H-3323 Pitch Rod Guide) which is the stock plastic item, but I also have the upgraded Zeal part (Z3025 Pitch Rod Guide II) which is supposedly suitable for some Nexus, the 32VR and 46VR.

The problem is that the original plastic pitch guide part has a moulded-in collar about half way up that supports /spaces the bottom of the swash from the upper bearing block. The Zeal part does not have this but nor does it mention the requirement for any additional collars when you use it. A look at a 46VR manual (same head as the 32VR I believe) shows the plastic part in use of course. Jason Chan's old pages show the Zeal part being used on his 46VR but together with a Zeal bearing block and HP Metal Swash Plate.

My query is that can I use the pitch slider without the other zeal parts...?

Here's a photo of Jason's VR head. Note gap (no collar) between bearing block and swash:

Here's the VR manual:

http://ullman.co.uk/Manuals/Concept46vr%20manual.pdf

p39 shows an exploded diagram of the mast assembly and you can clearly see the collar on the pitch guide (H-3323 right at the top of the page) and the fact that the collar sits above the upper bearing to effectively space the bearing block from the swash.

What do you guys think...?

Collar

Well, I don't have a VR but I have the Nexus 46 Deluxe, and still got it flying in a fuse.

I don't think you need the collar, as the swash cannot move up or down. That photo looks exactly like my Nexus (metal bearing block, metal pitch rod guide, no collar). I never had any other part requirement when I upgraded. The swash floats effectively.

I will go home and dig out my old plastic swash guide to check it is the same as the VR, but I am not aware of any other collar in their parts range.

Thanks RS,

I think you're right - the swash effectively becomes a floating item that is held in place by the various pushrods that connect to it. I have reassembled the mast in the heli with the metal guide and now floating swash and it seems pretty rock solid.

Good

Because I forgot to check last night. Well, at least I'm honest about it.

You should be OK.

Hey

While I'm at it, how is the all metal swash.

Mine was a bit notchy out of the box, and not really impressed with it (it was fairly cheap, even new). Thinking of going back to the old one.

The only part I upgraded is the pitch rod guide. Swash is the standard hybrid plastic and metal one. The photo above shows a pic of a heli I found on the web, not mine.

I have a lot of new-in-pack Zeal parts, some for Concept 30, some for VR and some that work on both models. The problem is I am loathed to crack open these parts that cost me an arm-and-a-leg to bolt to a VR which isn't my favourite of the Concepts. I have a really nice SR-X that would be a much nicer platform for the bits. I'll prolly equip the VR with all the Zeal parts I have that are not compatible with the earlier "30" models (like the pitch rod guide I have is for VR or Nexus only). It's all in a Jet Ranger fus so as a scaler, I am not going to fly it like my pants are on fire anyway.

Interesting to hear of the issues with the metal swash. I assume that's the Zeal HP Swash Plate...? This is not the first time I heard about dodgy machining or parts finishing by Kyosho. I heard that the gimbal ball thingy (if that's what it's called) wasn't polished too well in some cases and was a sticky fit.

Still, the HP swash is nearly a £100 part in the UK so for the money I'd expect it to be bang on. Even the stock swash is over £50.
