Greetings all-

I am using the stock ESC and motor in my TREX 500 and I have a question about how hot the motor should get.

I am just breaking in my batteries (Align 2600 25C packs) and only hover around for about 4:30 before bringing it in. The packs are around 46% after that which is where I want them until I cycle through them a few more times. I am running 95-90-90-90-95 idle up throttle curve and the 13-tooth pinion. I am not sure of my headspeed yet, but I am flying with my buddy tonight and will tach it then.

After my last flight I checked the motor temp with my finger and it was pretty hot. I could not leave my finger on it for more than a second. It cooled down after a minute, but right after the flight it was too hot to touch for long. The battery was barely warm.

Could this be from not flying full speed therefore not allowing enough air to cool the motor? I am doing genuine hover practice (nose in passes, figure 8s) so it's not like I am just sitting in one place. However, I have not really let it go yet.

Does that sound like it is too hot?

Thanks,

Jason

My experience is that they run pretty hot. I have a similar idle up setup with about 90 flights with a similar flying stye. My ESC is cool as is the BEC, but the motor gets to hot to touch for sure.

Putting the 12T pinion on will help keep the motor temp down and increase your flight time.

60% of the time, it works every time!

I have a 13T pinion and run a 2200 25C 6S pack, run a curve from 85 in the middle to 100 at full throttle. I do 3D the entire flight and it comes back pretty darn hot. Seems like it runs well enough and I too have heard they run a little hot. Not to mention the temp here is about 100 degrees so that doesn't help any. If it goes, I'll probably be going either Scorpion or Z-Power outrunner.

I put the Scorpion 1600 in mine with the 13T pinion at 100% throttle doing 3D and it just gets warm, takes about 100mah less out or the packs compared to the stock motor.

60% of the time, it works every time!

I would definitely go the Scorpion router once the stock motor goes, more power and cooler running, about the same price too so thats a plus.

You really should get this if you want to know what your batteries and motor are really heating up to. It's very accurate, instant reading, and easy to use.

For the motor, you can't beat a Venom onboard temp gauge, has memory for highest temp recorded, can pick them up for $22 and they're light. You can take them off easy enough if just want to check temp for one flight.
