The worst fear in my opinion, besides being struck by a blade is to have your heli loose all control of your machine.
Whether it be from interference, or just power loss.
I want to hear about your worst case "fly away".
Be safe out there!!!

A guy at our club lost is 90 size in January, he thinks his bat wire let go and all he could do was to watch it fly off very slowly, today 7 months later nobody has ever found it. He had just installed a new canopy and carb smart.

I had a Heli cut loose on me at plank field once while doing a demo flight. It was awful, the Heli just kept flying up and down the flight line destroying airplanes. It must have cut up about 30 planes before somebody finally shot it down with a 12 gauge.

My first heli, about 5 years ago, a Kyosho Nexus all on it's own went to full power, nosed over and dove for the ground at full speed from about 100'. The debris field was amazing. Last year I had a NRI "G" model in a auto pilot hover, just suddenly shoot for the sky and start to fly away, I tried to take over manually, but no luck, bird flew away about 200 yards, rolled to a knife edge left condition and drove itself into the dirt, a total loss, even the motor case was cracked, no reason ever discovered.

Ignorance is curable, stupidity is for life.

2 weeks ago while flying my 600E (luckily one of the only flights I wasn't doing 3d), my transmitter battery died (long story, not my fault) and I watched my bird fall from about 40 feet knife edge style. Believe it or not I only had $6.00 worth of damage!! Broke my skids, bent flybar, broke one blade grip holder which I had those parts from an old heli and 2 ball links with the ball (the $6.00)!! I didn't even look at the heli for the first few days because I knew it was going to be an epensive repair but I was pleasantly surprised when I totaled up the bill!!

It happens at least once at every field. Hopefully the person that it happened to, is able to warn other pilots about his mistake. I know I have.

Wow, this happens more than I would have thought!

I've had my own share of "power outages" where no failsafe will help, and won't fly any heli without a throttle return spring.

I started preaching about this in April 2004:
http://www.runryder.com/helicopter/t101050p1
Got one on the R50 and Evo shortly there after:
http://www.runryder.com/helicopter/t256765p1

Even figured a way to add one to my new Trex 600NP before it ever left the ground. The piece of mind knowing you are 99% covered from chicken dances, and especially "fly aways" is priceless.

There are many people on here who do the same now, but unfortunately it usually takes something bad to happen before one goes through the trouble!

People should set fail-safes correctly and if a nitro heli they should use a throttle return spring too... Just enough to pull back to idle/cut out when no power is connected.

Worst case fly-away

Never had it happen with a heli but I did with a plank. Worst feeling in the world. Had a GreatPlanes F-15 prop driven jet. Never liked how it flew had about 30 flights on it. Day before christmas about 12 years ago, took it off did a circuit with it, engine needed a litte tweeking, landed it. Leaned out the engine, then stop it, refueled, fired it up. Ran the engine up again, the engine was running great, took off about 30' off the ground I started a shallow left hand turn.......... I had nothing no response no nothing. It just flew in huge circles climed all the way into the clouds, could still hear the engine running. The engine finally died about 2 min after it entered the cloud. I watched for about a 1/2 hour waiting for it to come out of the clouds. It never did. To this day I believe it was battery failure. Yeah I didn't like the plank but it's still a loss.

Damn that ground is hard! When's the right time to get out of this money sucking hobby?

I had just bought a schluter Jr 50 from a guy,and I was going to learn to fly it by myself one day.I took it out to our equipment yard and got it fired up,well I was giving it throttle just like the guy showed me,but it was only screaming the engine and kept squatting down harder and harder.I couldn't figure out what was wrong with it,so I figured I would move one or two switches and see what took place.Well the second switch,I think, made that SOB jump up into the air so fast it would make yer head spin. All I could remember is from a book that said altitude is your safety, that would have been great but those old canopies were held in place by rubber bands just like my battery. The canopy just stayed on the ground while the heli, with the battery hanging below it climbed so friggin high.It didn't take long before here comes the battery,by itself.I just stood there and watched the heli come down by itself so nice and easy and landed, didn't break nothing. It took me at least a year and a half before I could land that thing like it did that day.Oh, and that switch that I moved was the invert switch!!

I thought we were talking about actual fly-aways not just battery failures.
