If your going to the Big Island.. Your there! This is on the big island. No flight necessary. We were there last July and the lava had stopped flowing into the ocean due to earthquakes. Now it's back to flowing like a river again into the sea. You WANT to take Hwy 130 from Hilo through Pahoa to the Royal Gardens. That's the best viewing. We're going back soon!
Plan a little hike.. Take water.
This is what you might run into...

damn, thats pretty cool! I thought the volcano on the big island was extinct?

I'll have to leave the wife and son behind, that place looks like a wasteland ha!

Bear Grylls did a survival episode going across those fields on one episode of "Man vs. Wild".

It was pretty eye opening

Thanks for the info!

Edit:

Just talked to my wife and she reminded me that we are going to Oahu not the big island

I will be buying some plane tickets to do some island hopping

There is a helicopter tour called "feel the heat" where they take the doors off and fly you around the lava flow. You really do "feel" it too, I highly suggest it. It also helps if you plan on walking out and seeing everything, you have a mental picture of where you are at.

Heck, you might as well go to Los Angeles .

The Big Island is my favorite island.

This is our favorite place to stay every year:

8 years ago we hiked to the lava flow into the ocean. Once was enough. Should have taken the helicopter ride instead.

Have fun in Oahu regardless. I'd rather be there than here.

Dakine,

I actually don't have a choice in the matter, my sister in-law is getting married oh Oahu. That's only a few hours out of the week though. I don't plan on hanging out too long after the wedding.

The great part about going to her wedding is she is renting an entire beachside compound there for us all. I just had to pay to get there.

I think it will cost you a $100 just to hop over to the Big Island .

If you're there for a week, I'd say DO IT! Hop to the Big Island and go for that Heli ride. My guess on the heli ride cost would be around $300 - $500. So, your venture may cost you around $600+ . Don't forget cab fairs as well. This is a bargain comparing my stay on the Big Island are usually at $1,500 a night . And we were there for 11 nights . Every night I would count how many helis I could have bought with that money .

Just go to a strip joint on Oahu instead . Oh, and with all due respect to your wife .

yeah, that's what I've been told. I told the wife to save a few hundred extra for spending cash so I can go see the volcano . We aren't rich but we're saving

I won't be flying in the heli then. That's a bit more dough than I am willing to spend on a helicopter ride. Shoot, thats enough money to operate a helicopter for hours.

Oh well, I'll just hike it.

Yeah, we're gonna do the regular stuff like relax on the beach next to the compound and snorkel. We also plan on doing some hiking to see the waterfalls.

I am determined to get to the Big Island though and see the volcanoes.

A friend of mine here at work tells me that astronomers will bring out smaller telescopes at night and show visitors various objects in the night sky in a tour type fassion.

I think I may try to do that too.

I'm gonna start a thread up for this subject cause I'm hijacking this one

It's $69 each way from Oahu. Hawaiian or GO Airline. We did the heli ride too and it cost us $255 each. If you fly into the big island you want to land in Hilo not the Kona side. It's about a 2 1/2 hour drive from Kona. Valcano national park is about 50 minutes from Hilo airport. And the heli tours are based right at Hilo airport.
Here's a couple of pics from the heli tour we took!

That sounds real nice.Have fun.
My sister did the same last year, but we all went to puerto vallarta Mexico. It was real nice and all,but what a rats nest.Biggest waste of money.Everyone got sick on the wedding night
Sha was convinced it was the most beautiful thing. But I guess that's all that matters.
After going to Mexico for the first time and seeing everything,it kinda clicked in my mind the thought process of some people.

Since we're hijacking ...

Hilo side....YUCK!! I hate that side. It's like going to Seattle, always raining. I LOVE KONA!!!! If you do land in Hilo, don't judge the Big Island by it (Hilo).

Thanks Bart!!

Your right about that Dakine!! It's not ugly but Kona is Awesome!
I was just trying to save him some travel time...
Hilo has 12' (not inches) of rain every year.
Here's a pic of resturant/shopping row in Kona!

I was born in Hilo and the joke is: the trees in waimea lean towards the town because hilo sucks or kona blows.
