Just completed a 5003d and am wondering what is the proper procedure for start-up with the Jazz speed controller. I've never owned one before and have never used a governor. I have it programmed for mode 4, and mode 9. What is your "procedure" for the first flight? Thanks in advance for the help

Hi Met,

I fly the Jazz 80 with a Century 600+ 1100 kv (Z30) motor and SAB 550 blades.

I have my Normal curve set to 0 straight across. My IU1 is 76% straight across for 2100 rpm, and my IU2 is set for 84% for 2200 rpm (but I never use it).

When I start out, I hit my timer, then flip the switch into IU1. I let it set on the ground at 0 pitch until it runs up to speed. It says in the instructions that this is necessary for it to set the governor. Then the governor maintains that rpm through the rest of the flight.

After she runs up, I take off and give her hell. I love the governor on the Jazz. It seems to do a great job of maintaining headspeed.

Keep 'em flying.

I'll be interested to hear if others have something significant, but these things are fantastic. There's nothing to do beyond mode 4 and 9. The governor just works and the slow start is a nice slow start. Presuming you have your throttle curves the way you want (normal starting at zero, others at the right level)...and the motor spinning the right way. Radio on, batt connect, wait for the beep, throttle hold...check controls, back to normal, spool up at zero pitch, idle 1, take off! Tom

Mode 9 = Lipo protection (low voltage shutoff)

Anyone know what the default setting is for mode 9, if its not set?

I just setup my Jazz last night, using only modes 1 and 4.

.8 v per cell...basically you're on your own. Mode 9 changes that to 3v per cell.

heres how I treat the jazz every flight,

normal mode throttle curve, 0-100 'normal' throttle curve, its just for plugging the battery in and getting the rotor spinning

idle 1, 80% flat throttle curve, you will need flat curves for the governor mode or it will be disabled.

I hit idle 1 and the timer just after I get the rotor spinning, then I bring the stick to zero pitch and wait until the rotor speed stabilizes...then its governed and I go fly it.

In case you run into this down the road, the jazz doesnt run a consistent speed each flight, i.e. you might have 2050 one flight and 2010 the next....this depends on the battery.....its nothing to be concerned with, but don't be surprised by it and think its a speed control issue.

if you have a target rpm range you want, change it at the pinion and run a flat throttle curve of no more than 80% to leave room for the governor to do its thing. A jazz can be run down to 60%

if you want more flight time and don't intend to push the heli very hard, run the governor up to 95% and use a smaller pinion.

thats about all there is to using a jazz, its nice and simple
