That is what I was tring to do, but being made of plastic. Put it out of my time range. Next week I will have the hubs for the G. and after I see what billy comes up with. I'll know if there needs to be any changes to the fan, If no changes are needed I'll. let you know and you can give it a try. THE SHROUD NEEDS TO BE AS CLOSE TO THE UPPER FRAME AS IT CAN GET. WALLY

Any updates from anyone who has installed Wally's fan?

I should be able to be back up in the air by next weekend all being well.

I flew my Condor yesterday .... It seems that that power loss in the summertime compared to cool weather gap, has been closed further...I'm very pleased with the results...
I'm 11/4 on the low, and 11/2 on the high, and my exhaust temp reading was 212 to 215...

Ircha bound finally home.

I went to Ircha this year as my one time a year fun fly. While I wish there was more gassers at Ircha and maybe more of a presense they are what they are. I was happy at the flying I got to do. I got the tuned pipe engine to run like a banshee. It was pulling good pitch and not bogging at all. C.A.P. (Wally) went as well and met up with him. We tried the a diffrent fan that was a tighter fit without the redirect on and seemed to be close to the temps of the other. The temps I am getting with the tuned where anywhere from 210 at the coolest to 245 on the hottest point of motor on bottom depending on the needles. The where pretty sensitive for temp. This is cooler than what I had previous to 260-270 range or 220 on the carb side first fin.

The motor was pulled and used Wally's 29cc motor with his porting. This motor in his heli was pulling 199-209 temps consistant. Even after I did full collective curtis circles to heat it up the engine remained cool. It seems the tuned pipe on my setup was pulling more heat to the engine. The 29cc had a cent v2 muffler on it. The power was good as good as my 26 wth the tuned pipe. The vibration which I was concerned about was nill. I am amazed at how this 29 at 12500 has little to no vibration without any weight removed from the piston. Stock except for porting on the piston.

Sorry couldn't be with you at IRCHA

Would love to go but its just too damn far for me... I've been to several more local events to me here in the NE. Remaining schedule for this year as follows:

September 5,6,7, Atlantic city
September 27th, 495th in Tewksbury, MA
October 11,12 Heli Phenomenon in Mansfield, MA

Hey what is that motor in the picture? Is the the 29cc? That thing looks more beat up than new. Crashed or something? And what is the black "shroud" inside the regulator shroud covering 1/2 the fins? Some sort of cooling method to force the air faster through?

Yes I crashed my condor. Thats why it looks beat up. Yes it's a 29.5 cc. That motor with Cody flying, handle everything a 260 3D pro with tune pipes could do in a 1005, but it was in my Condor about 2 lbs heavier, no tune pipe,(century v2 muffler) and 800mm blades, but stock, no porting, no lighten pistons, just duration timing on the piston with no vibs, and you can advance the timing if needed to match the rpms, and that black thing is the Redirect that comes with the Cooler fan. It forces the air around the the bottom of the motor to evenly cool the whole engine cylinder head.

Okay, I've just seen 2 pictures of fan shrouds today on here that have that extra piece to deflect the air around the engine like in your picture. I wonder if I should put something like that on my Spectra. I wouldn't think that it would be very hard to add something like that to the fan shroud.

I have very similar needles to Bill and I am getting almost the same temps on the exhaust side of the motor. Low 1 5/16 on the low 1 3/8 on the high. 231 Hanson. 210 to 220F range.
Note my ambient temp was about 70F.

If your present fan (stock) does not develop enough static pressure to push the air through the added restriction your cooling capacity could go down which will result in a net higher temperature. The fan and the shroud together is a system. While changing the fan without changing the shroud may result in some gain doing the reverse will likely not.

Ace is correct. As I found changing just the fan did help, but it is a system and works together. the 'way' the fan sits in the shroud really matters with heat removal as well as the fan design.

Wally explained the fan fins should be very close to the shroud at one point and should tapper to a larger and larger gap on the exit of the shroud. As the shroud I am running now without a redirect is doing very close to the first shroud with a redirect on temps. The redirect is not meant to close the exit or restrict as much as its mean to divert the exhaust to the hottest point on the head and doing the more cooling.

When I get the engine back in my bird I will take temps on it before I put the delfection on and then after. I would like to see numbers for this.

Update+ new piston try

I normally would wait to post anything on RR, but after a flight this morning I am pretty happy with the results. Wally (C.A.P.) had lengthened the duration of the engine opening the exhaust sooner and letting fresh air in sooner as well. This raised the timming on the intake and exhaust side at the same time since everything must be balanced. This creates a higher rpm motor as well as Wally got the weight down to near 20 grams.

While I am running the hanson max engine I found like many gasser guys a resonance at 12.7-13k and lowered my operating range down to 12.2k. Since wally changed the timming and the weight I tried the 13k mark again this morning. I tuned the high end and found the sweet spot. Vibrations.. nill my runout is nill and my pitch is 13 degrees and pulls it. rotor is 1910rpm. This is more pitch than I have ever pulled.

Temps since its in the mid 40's where cold almost on the engine near 210. Exhaust man 370 manifold.

I did change to his shroud design which is a tighter fit with the redirect and without which helps. Also I went to 91 octane. All of these have have lowered the temps each one I have done a before and after test on to verify only changing one at a time.

Now the only issue is the head doesnt have enough pitch in it to make full use of the engine....lol.

I love my gasser

And I know you were always "concerned" about power. But it sounds like after all your mods it might be hard to resist it against a nitro even for you!

Sounds like you got some good power, but also don't discount flying in 45 degree weather. I can always feel the power difference between that and a summer day.

Good job!

well..

That is sort of correct Raja. The temps in cool weather act like a good fan in hot weather. In a hot day with a good fan you will not have sag in power. My temps in hot weather are atleast 40 degrees cooler now than what the where. at 60 degrees today I was still below 230

Has anyone put one of these fans/shrouds in a Spectra-G yet, and if so, do you have a picture you could share? Wallys says that the new fan is taller than the stock fan, and I am just wondering if it will fit inside the frame alright.

Haven't done it yet, but that's next on my list. Unfortunately, I have to rebuild the Spectra, as it went in hard today.

X-cal: Would you mind posting some pictures of the damaged heli and the rebuild? Maybe you could tell us about your experience ordering parts as well. What happened to cause it to crash?

By the way: Your modified printed manual is very helpful.
