The esc controls the power to the motor, not use it.

The motor will use current depending on how hard you fly - and the esc try to make sure the power is controlled to the motor with your throttle requests.
The battery will try to supply the current requested by the motor.

The original Trex-450's used a 25A esc and that was fine for the early weaker motors. The modern motors (and faster headspeed) use more current - and the esc must try to control that. I suggest a 35A esc minimum as the 20A esc will be at its limits and will probably overheat.

I hope that helps.

20 amp ESC is too small, 25 amp is very marginal, unless you're looking at low head speeds and not much else but hovering. 35 Amp is minimum, some of the hotter motors these days are starting to outstrip the capacity of the 35 amp models.

If you use too small an ESC, it will most likely continually go in and out of its current limit mode -- shutting off the motor, and worst case is that the ESC goes up in flames along with your heli.

Since you haven't smoked it yet it must be just marginal. You can help it by adding a seperate UBEC but sooner than later you will burn it out.
I used to have this problem with some of the 30 amp ESCs and the 430L and it's only a 25amp motor.

Way too low amperage - 35 is what you need. Align has a good one with a blue heatsink attached. Definitely worth upgrading to protect your investment.
