Hi everybody.

I finished building a brand new Swift 16 ( plastic )and guess what? Yes sir, it vibrates very much on spool up and down. My Swift is from last year and it has a hardened steel feather spindle, I balanced blades ( woodies ) I checked main shaft with glass and its ok, and I made it spool without the blades and no vibration, so, what else can I do????

Where can vibrations come from?

I,ve built a few T-Rex and MT for myself and for other friends and they all fly very well and very smooth, so, I dont know why Swift should be so diferent....

I sent a message to century helis web page explaining them the problem.

Any help?

Thanks

Oscar

Oscar, the Swift likes to have the blades run really snug (tighter than most). Snug them up and it will probably help. But IMO the funky chicken is mainly caused by the bowlegged stork landing gear! I have switched to Hirobo Sceadu landing gear and I don't get the wobbles at all. Not to mention it looks a lot better.

Change the LG to the ones Chris mentioned or I used the Raptor 30 LG. Then take the boom supports and attatch them underneath the carbon tray directly to the frame and then you should be fine.....Ron

This is from a different post with the same problem.

Possible Solution

Well guys I might have found out the cause of my insane vibration....Maybe! When installing my new main shaft, I bolted the head on and slid the main shaft into the bearing blocks minus the main gear and turned my heli sideways. Well upon doing that i noticed that the head would stop turnig in a certain spot with one of the blades grips on the bottom. To make a long story short come to find out that one of my blade grips is 2 grams heavier than the other one!!! So I will have to remove some of the material of the heavier blade grip and get them perfectly balanced, once thats done I will do the same with the paddles. I would definetly try balancing your head this way if you have a vibration problem.

Thanks guys

I'll try with a stiffer LG....

Could it be a blade problem? When I changed to CF blades on my MT and T-Rex it made a big diference. Even the slightest vibration dissapeard and no more tracking problems...

Thanks again

Hi Pistol_Pete.

I took of the main blades and made the heli run to check vibrations on rotorhead and flybar with paddles, and no vibrations....
I put the blades back on and dancing vibrations again.

Anybody wants a Swift 16?

regards

i could always use another swift if you're giveing your's away

I have 3 now and i love them.

after my last run in with the ground i install the stk landing gear on one of my 16's and no chicken dance.but i run my blades tight.

When you spool down do you have ant negitive pitch applied?

I run 7* negitive in normal so when i spool down thats how much negitve pitch it has.

with out any pitch i've been told you get those ground resonence waves bouncing back and hitting the rotor blades at a certain rpm.

Few helis will spool up initially without any a bit of shaking.

This is because (unless you can guarantee that your blades are pulled out to their natural lead/lag position that they have when turning at normal speed) as you spool up, the blades will have to do so by themselves. And until they find this natural position, there will always be some vibes...not just with the Swift, but with almost any heli that uses blades that weigh more then 85 grams each.

I put the blades back on and dancing vibrations again.
then you either have blades out of balance and/or blades need a lil more tightening.

keep us posted...thanks.

Hi friends.

I've changed the original landing gear to raptor 50 LG and I',ve
also put some white lithium greas on dampers and feather spindle.
Now I'm waiting for the ESC to arrive and I'll try again. Hope it runs better
I'll keep you posted...

Good deal Oscar... So was it the Raptor 50 landing gear that fixed your problem? Do you have any pictures with the gear mounted?

Hi.

Yes, I changed the original LG for the Raptor 50 LG, and I also put lithium grease on dampers and Fspindle.
I'll post some pics this week end

What blades are you using?

If their chordwise (not the commonly measured spanwise) CofG is of inordinately out, it will exasperate this.

Have you tried a different set of blades?

I always put a lot of grease on the dampner.

tightening the blades down helps too, and using beefier landing struts (combined with lower anchor point for boom support, as LaughingStill mentions) helps tremendously.

sometimes it still shakes a little during spooling down, since the vibration is slight - i just play with the pitch while the head speed decreases and the pitch pumping takes care of the vibration.

cheers, khan
