If you search for the registration number (N96MB) you will find that it also crashed in 2000 due to engine failure at low altitude. An interesting coincidence.

I believe that the older 47s had wooden blades. As long as they are regularly inspected, they are not life limited like metal or composite blades.

Wow 2 years?
That had to be a heartbreaker but it could have been MUCH worse. Im a BIG fan of Bell 47's...actually my screen saver is of my scale 47G flying ironically a few hundred feet from where it appears the the full scale Bell took its last flight.

I was standing right next to the guy video taping and was one of the first to the crash. Was pretty scary and I'm suprised no one was hurt worse. The pilot kept adding collective and the heli would sputter/miss a bit. I was also suprised that he actually took off after the heli kept doing that. Maybe he couldn't hear it. I also have almost the same footage of take off, but threw the video camera to my wife once it started to drop and took off running. Pretty crap feeling to see something like that happen right in front of ya'.

And JC still suffers from back problems caused by the crash. However he is still alive to live and that's what matters.

Others aren't as lucky. Just this week a Medical Heli took off from a fundraiser event heading home and lost a rotor in flight. Three persons on board lost their lives.

Sorry for the old bump...

I think that's the first I have ever heard of a rotor separating from the heli in flight. Not just a blade, the whole rotor.
"The rotor blades were separated and came to rest about 200 yards away," as did the rotor mast, Knudson said. "We have witness reports reporting the same thing."
I suspect some maintenance procedures are going to be re-examined or revised.

Ya, they had another heli from the same company go down just a few months ago. It's a shame that people have to loose their life to get someone else to do their job correctly.

There was nothing left of the Medical Helicopter. When it hit the ground it exploded. Killing all 3 instantly.

Engine failure my ass... I heard he had some real bad blade woof and thats what caused the crash... It was those crappy wood blades he used. Now if he had good carbon blades on there, this would have never happened!!! -Steve

Just kidding...

I'm pretty sure I remember these photos were of the crash. Also, a lot of people dont realize some "real" helicopters used wood blades.

There's nothing funny about a serious crash that dang near took the life of someone of I know. Joke about an RC crash all you want but lets not joke about a crash involving serious injury to human life.

WreckRman2, take a pill already.

The engine had problems, I was there, I heard it. Sounded fine during runup. Going behind the only tree in the area, about 50ft up, the engine make a pop, lost power and he went in.

Crash

According to Jerry one of the timing gears fractured throwing the motor out of time and effectively killing any power. He was at about 75 ft and 40 mph from which he should not have been able to make any sort of auto. It is only through the grace of God that he and JC survived and especially that they both walked away with only minor injuries. Chances are in ten crashes like that one, there are fatalities in eight of them and serious injuries in the ninth.
