I don't think a torque tube set up would be an improvement. Bevel and/or crown gears I believe would be a lot more troublesome than the relative simple belt system (albeit using a better after market belt).
When I first started into helicopters 20 year ago, I bought a Baron 28 which had a fully encased tail rotor drive sealed and lubricated. It was a very neat package but also very expensive to repair or replace and generated considerable heat which equates to less power. Cheaper crown gears running open air housings are easily striped and noisy as well.
Align needs to address the stock belt durability issue is the bottom line here. There is nothing really wrong with the belt system in general.
