Detroit, where we eat the dead

I am doing some research for a friend for the 500. I see there are tons of options between motor, esc, gyro, yada yada.

What I am looking for is a direction to go in. He will be flying sport/mild 3d type stuff. I would like him to get something that will be able to do hard 3d if he decides to go that route.

Batteries:
6s or 5s??
It seems the Outrage 6s 2200mah or 2500mah pack would be a good choice.

Motor:
I see people saying they are burning up the align so what is a good motor??

ESC:
Same thing here with align stuff. Go with phoenix or jazz??

Servos:
Futaba 9650 or JR 3517??

Gyro/ tail servo:
I was thinking 401 or 770 with 3517?

Charger:
e-STATION BC8 or EOS610DUO HYPERION??

What else is needed? Would be using a Futaba 2.4 Rx of some type so don't need info for that.

Whats with the static buildup? Do you need the gforce wick thingy?

Thanks,
Branden

I have 3 trex 500's and have a variety of servos in them. One has Futaba 9650's on cyclic, another has Z3650 JR servos and a third with a modified frame has Futaba BLS 451's.

All of the servos work well. I have been out of flying for many years so I am not doing hard 3D yet, but am working on it.

If I were only going to have one 500, I would try to find the JR Z3650 servos, those are metal geared and fast.

The 401 is a good gyro, but if the heli is going in the direction of hard 3D, I would recomend a gyro that will handle backward flight a little better than a 401. I have a couple of G7703D gyros and those seem to work well, I also have a couple of GY611's and a solid G and those work well also. I also have a rex 600 and a couple of HDX 500's so the other gyro's are in them.

If price is a consideration for the gyro, the G7703D is pretty reasonably priced and should work verry well.

For batteries, I chose to use 2 3 cell packs, because I have DN power chargers that will only charge up to a 4 cell pack. I am using Kong Power batteries and they seem to be working verry well. One note of caution, don't cheat and try to use real cheap batteries, I tried that and lost most of the money I spent on batteries.

I have changed all of the motors to Scorpion's and have ether Scorpion or Castle ESC's. I did not have any problems with the Align motors or ESC's but I did not run them all that long. I am sure thier may be better motors than the Scorpion, but they will probbily be a lot more money, so I feel the Scorpion is a verry good motor especially when cost is a consideration. I also run external switching BEC's and so far those are working well.

I would also highly recomend the torque tube upgrade, I am running them in all of mine and so far they have worked flawlessly. I did not have any static problems with mine befor the TT's but I also did not want to take a chance when the dry weather hit.

Outhouse is right the stock ESC and motor will work fine. The heli can be built with the stock parts and changed at a later date if you have to or just want to. It will fly verry well with the stock motor ect.

I had some extra money when I bought mine and added all the metal parts and bling I could get, however none of the stock parts would have kept it from performing well. I feel this is a great heli and probbily the right size for an electric heli, big enough to handle well and not so big it requires big dollar batteries like the Trex 600.
