Raja's Jewel saved my A$$ this weekend. . .

After sitting in my shop all winter (and before), I finally got my PGasser out this weekend for some flying. I was I little rusty on procedures and the sticks but got the bird started and flew it around for a few minutes. I brought it in at one point and set it down to make an engine adjustment, then killed the engine via a switch on the radio. As soon as I did, I noticed I had absolutely no control and no power indication on the heli. A look under the hood surprised the hell out of me, as I realized I had completely forgotten to turn on the two battery pack switches!

This is the true testament to the jewel generator; to be able to fly absolutely un-affected without battery power. I would NOT recommend this test to anyone, because I nearly had to change my shorts after that little discovery.

Bottom line: Buy it, install it, use it. This is the best thing since the gas engine itself. Just my 2 cents. . .

It happens because it can. It seems like everyone that has a generator setup has done just that. It surprises me that the gyro initializes fine with the vibration of the engine. I have had to beat my starting procedures into my head and don’t talk to people during this procedure to insure I don’t repeat this mistake. I think the interruption is the cause of it all.

Can't blame anyone but myself this time, since I was out alone. I did have my mind on tweaking the engine though, and I hadn't flown in a while so my preflight procedures were a little rusty. An incident like that sure smacks you upside the head and back into safe habits in a hurry.

I was just grateful the generator was there to cover my brain fart. I think most people just look at it from a convenience aspect, but it is really more of a safety issue to me now. I will always recommend one to anyone flying a gasser.

Hi Propilot:

I did that right after I started flying helis a few years ago, only my throttle wasn't at idle; it was about half way open. Long story short - sat there with a death grip on the rotor head, pissin' my pants while the motor happily tore up the clutch in a cloud of smoke. I vowed it would not happen that way again.

Now days, besides the generator, I have a manual kill switch on the gasser and a TX kill switch to shut the butterfly completely.

I got a couple of hours on my predator tonight. Can't wait to run it with the Jewel! I made up another handy-dandy plastic mount for the rectifier/capacitor. Used hot-glue to mount the regulator on the front. Now I have to figure out how to mount a switch! I didn't have a slide switch before as I had a pin flag switch for my Arizona under the landing gear.

I did grind a flat spot on the motor shaft because the grub screw was not grabbing the shaft too well. In order to ensure no metal got into the electronics or the motor I put the whole assembly in a sock then poked the shaft out to grind on it a bit.

With the unfortunate RR database server outage and resulting data loss, I'll repost the link to the onboard generator for Nitro birds that Ariwolfrc did a few years back

http://airwolfrc.com/OBA.html

and my offer to send the sock I no longer need to match Jack's blade cover

schematics

saw the old posts on this concept, but it looks like the "how to's" on building them are long gone. Anyone out there willing to share? Im a tinkerer and sounds like a fun build project.

EDIT
Came across enough info to be dangerous, will see how it goes. Anyone wanting to spoon feed me, im willing to listen.

thanks

I'll add my 0.2 too.
I used the Jewel from day one in my gasser. Would not dare flying without it now. Simple as that.

That reassuring glance at the "charging" LED (confirmed by the pegged at max voltwatch) has become second nature for me, just before every take-off.

Here is my best advice about the Jewel: Don't leave the ground without it.

I was flying my Spectra G and it seemed just happy as it could be. After awhile I came and made a nice smooth landing, let the engine fast idle for a short cool-down. Then I shut the engine off and suddenly I had no servo control on anything, it was DEAD ! Inspection at the bench showed the battery lead had broken at one of the connectors, so I had been flying on the Jewel only and never noticed any change. No Jewel and I would have had a major crash. So see, a Jewel can pay for itself in preventing a crash. YEAH RAJA

I think about the hereafter. I go somewhere to get something, then wonder what I'm here after ?

You're not the first guy saved by the Jewel,
You would think with the number of confirmed cases that nobody would fly a gasser without a generator whether it is the jewel or some other make.
