Tonight I flew about 12 packs.

I'm doing MMike piros.

Tail in, quick nose in

Quick tail in...

The purpose, I don't know yet.

Don't feel bad about that - look at it as practicing bail-out maneuvers. Seriously. If you master the art of "getting-back-to-tail-in-as-fast-as-f'n-possible" you'll save money and rebuild time.

Use this maneuver as soon as ANYTHING starts to feel sketchy.

It is still raining like every hour here. Not a lot but enough to stop me from flying. I have humidity and right now there is a lot of it. I am used to 5%, so when 85% comes along ... it bugs the crap out of me.

### More Rex vs. Mini Comparo ###
I did get a chance to fly 2 packs in the Rex though. Nice machine for sure. Man is it fast with those little s3114 servos on there. Big change from the freaking slow DS285s on the Mini. I flew the first pack with the 11T on it and it had zero punch. So I swapped it for the 13T and now it has lots of gusto! Even with 315mm blades on it, it climbs like the Mini speed wise and here comes one of the first differences I find in the head design. The Rex takes big collective movements to make big changes in pitch, where as the Mini seems to add collective faster. By this I mean if both helis have similar head speeds and pitch ranges and I make the same adjustment to the collective on both, the Mini will move more. This makes the Mini feel like it has more punch. But when you grab full pitch on either heli, they move about the same. The Rex is probably a little faster due to the weight advantage but they are similar.

Cyclic movements are more commanding on the Rex but that is likely because of the nearly 50% faster servos (.10 vs .18). Other things I like are the tail on the Rex. It is much simpler than the Mini and works very well while being so simple. That is appreciated. The fiberglass canopy is a pain to get on and off but with the big hole cut in the bottom, I get to connect and disconnect the battery with the canopy in place. Now onto frugality. So far the Rex is way more efficient but I think there is something wrong in the Mini somewhere. Probably a worn bearing or something. I ran 7min with the 13T and only put back in 1343 into a 2200 pack.

Well, I did some flying at the ballpark Friday. Really drilling on nose-in, slower piros, and full circles. It's coming along nicely. I only bailed out of nose-in once or twice; the rest were deliberate transitions into FF.

It's great to have a heli whose tail doesn't blow out after hard stops and multi-piros. That's the only fault I know of with the King (after the required upgrades), and ultimately that's what pushed me to the Dark Side.

And it's nice to be able to fly more than one pack per day. Padawan got me a Cellpro in exchange for training and setup on his BeltCP, and indefinite use of the HBFP. I was having to wait 2½ - 3 hrs for the Hobbico to charge the TP 2200, but the Cellpro does it in less than an hour.

I just updated the battery log to reflect the new Outrages and I noticed that I have passed 300 flights. The breakdown is

King2 = 208
Mini = 93
Rex = 3

The sun is out right now. That is the first time in 3 days! Maybe it will finally be a nice clear day. Maybe I will get some real flying in? I hope so.

I think this is what was in the back of my mind:

It's an escape from this counterintuitive nose in.

It's just not comfy yet. As I've mentioned, I'm the slow cautious type.

I'm staying at it.

Toolman, it's hard work but rewarding and fun.

Not to be mistaken, I was talking about 300 flights on helis ... not batteries. My most cycles on a battery is 53 on my first FMA pack. It has lost a little compared to a new FMA pack but not too much.

Ok so 4 more flights on the Rex this morning. I ended up dumbing down the cyclic because the s3114s are just too fast. It was way too easy to get into trouble. I also need to lower the gain on the 240 again as it was wagging a lot in the slight breeze. Other than that I just flew in idle-up and am finding that it flies very much like the Mini.

As for temps today, the ambient was aroud 80F and the Outrage packs were right about 20F over ambient and the FMA pack was right at 30F over ambient. I also found that the Align 430L was running 42F over ambient most of the time. The Align 35A was about 20F over but I am using a separate BEC, so that is lower than it would be if I wasn't.

As for the Outrage vs FMA deal, the outrage packs certainly have more punch than the FMA pack did but that was my oldest one, so that may have something to do with it. I couldn't really hear a head speed change but I had a lot more collective authority. A note on the Outrage packs, I was sent the 30C version by accident so in reality I am comparing a 30C battery to an 18C.

Mike,
You just need to stay motivated and keep doing it. Eventually you will just get it. Im not 100% comfortable yet. But i keep doing it and i get a little more comfortable all the time. Its one of those things that just takes time. You cant buy it. No one sells it. Its paid for by you and produced by you. It wont happen overnight but you will know it when it happens.

It was much to windy to fly today. But I flew 4 packs anyway. Tried to keep moving, that seems to the only way to really deal with wind and enjoy it.

Service today was tailbox bearings replacements. Got the ceramics finaly installed. Also cleaned and greased the tail grip bearings. Went through the entire tail, cleaned greased and loctited everything back together. The result, quieter. But also I found the gyro gain is now to too high. I was getting wagging and bounce back when stopping quicky. Turned it down 5% and that locked in the tail.

Also spent time time at the Arlington Fly-in and airshow.

Lots of incredible planes doing incredible things. Only one heli, a Robinson, and it was giving rides.

I woke up at 05:30 and headed to my usual flying location. Worked out...performed 10-100 yard sprints...after each sprint immediately drop and perform 20-push-ups, jog back to the start. After my workout, I rested about 10 min. and then fired up the Super FP. Winds were 7 mph with gusts to 15. Worked on fast, high banked turns and high stall turns. Great flying!

To me, there is nothing better than having the ability to fly in the wind. I remember when I used to cringe at the thought of flying in just 5 mph winds. Now, 5, 10, 12, 15 mph winds...no big deal. It just takes alot of stick time on the real heli and in the sim.

Excellent flying, shizack!

WAAAY windy here.

The prop on the weather station is missing a blade!

I'm guessing 35 MPH gusts.

Got 6 batts in this evening and feel like I have a little better control. I am only hovering tail in but I keep turning the heli a 1/4 turn at a time in hover. Doing pretty good with nose left hover.
A few wind gusts kept things interesting ,but all in all I think im doing pretty good. Work has been crazy so i've lost about 2 months flying. Also learned a good lesson tonight and that is keep your eye on the heli. It seemed like I was flyin to long and looked down at the timer. Won't do that again
No crashes
It was a good day

Running errands this morning. On the way stop at 3 different places to get some flights in. Then flew a few more batteries in apartment parking lot until kids comes out and play.

Went kayaking in the lake, then try to beat the sun home to get more flight times in. Then it started to rain so waited for the rain, didn't stop until it got dark.

Installed the night gears and flew 2 packs around. pretty good day, no crashes or any close calls.

flew about 8 batteries today!

Congrats Chris. Where was mfcrash with the camera?

It was windy again here today. I flew two outside and a bunch more inside.

Caught a rare glipse of our resident Osprey eating a fish. This is the same big bird that was circling over my HBK2 a couple days ago.

I'm trying a Youtube alternative. Please excuse the shaky camera work, this was at full zoom without a tripod. It gets better toward the end of the video.

No flights for me past 6 days. A lot of wind here. Also I have a problem with the ESC (I think). Heli acts like it has a throttle body & fuel lines are clogged. I am waiting for new ESC to arrive from HK.
