If I hold the tail drive bevel gear fixed (at the main frame end of the drive shaft) and move the T/R hub back and forth there is smoe play (maybe 10º). Is this normal?

Yes you will want a little play, so the gears don't bind and break , Plus there is a little play in the drive shaft...

It is possible to have no play + no binding. At least that is what I had last time I checked, but I haven't had more than a gallon through my R60. Maybe with a little wear some play will develop, but then I will probably ad some of the adjustment washers.
Currently I don't have any play in my driveshaft.

Just take it apart, locate the play and see if you can ad a washer or two to get rid of the play without adding binding.
